Used Pennzoil Supreme Duty 15-40 since the truck was new, until the last 4 oil changes where I switched to Pennzoil Long life. Ever since going to the Long Life, I have an oil/vapor aroma when the truck is idling, gets less with mileage on the oil, but always there. Even tried Rotella T on the last change, and after 60 miles it still has that oil/vapor aroma. What is up? Should I go to the dealer before the expires for rings? Or just go back to the Supreme Duty? I have heard of the 24 valvers doing this? But I don't think my truck added some valves between oil changes.

Hemi, what you are smelling is the carrier for the additive package in the oil burning off, it is normal and all oils have it to some extent. Some oils have a much stronger odor than others though. Make sure you do not have any leaks, leaks on hot exhuast are the worst for the smell. If no leaks the smell should go away after 400-600 miles of full operating temps in the oil. If you do a lot of short run stuff and the oil never gets hot for long the smells may still be there at your change interval. I would not worry about it personally. Hope this helps.

Hemi dart, thanks I think I will go on-line to the conspiracy web apges and order a gas mask. L Smith, thanks for the info, I imagine that the Supreme Duty was a bit higher quality (hence the renaming to "Euro Blend, and charging more), that may be why it did not have the oil vapor smell. Guess I will go back to the Euro(Supreme duty) at $320 a drum. It may cost more but has to better for the engine than the oil smell from others. You are also correct in that short trips don't help. I drive 12 miles to work and about 20 miles home.
