Hi,

I am going to install an oil temp gauge. As part of a 3 gauge install in the cubby. I am doing fuel psi, oil psi, & oil temp. I already have boost & egt. I thought I would put the oil temp sender in one of the ports on the top of the oil filter. I understand that this is on the filtered, clean oil side. Also, I believe someone on the board mentioned that it is pretty close to the return of the oil supply from the turbo. If this is true would this be the place where the oil is the hottest? Seems like the best place to measure oil temp is where it is the hottest? A post from recent days seems to indicate that there may be a heat exchanger on the dirty side of filter mount prior to the filter and the port. A liquid oil cooler - oil cooled by antifreeze prior to the oil entering the filter. If that is the case it seems like using this port may be providing oil temp for some of the coolest oil in the system?

Thank you for the help.

the pan would read the hottest, as the oil sheers in the bearings [turbo, mains, rods, cam], it gets hot and drops to pan. that would give you the hottest temps on our engines, but i wouldn't worry about how hot the oil is down there, i'd want to monitor the oil temprature going into the engine & turbocharger. the plug on top of the filter head would give you this. when i get the rest of my gauges my temp will be from the filter head, and pressure will be from the left side of engine lube oil gallery [currently have a crappy electric gauge there, either going mechanical or top of line electric]. .

I installed an oil temp probe in the location you mentioned about 3 weeks ago with a 'T' fitting. I am taking mechanical oil pressure and temp at that location adjacent to the cooling line to the turbo. Seems to be working well so far. My temp runs about 150 degrees here with my camper on board, ambient temp at 82 and running 65 mph. The temp would certainly be warmer in the pan BUT harder to install. Good luck!!
