I know this topic has been discussed many times before but I can't seem to find all the answers I'm looking for. I'm finally going to put Amsoil (15W-40W Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine) in the crankcase after running Delo 400 15W-40W all it's life (37,000 miles). I was wondering if there was anything special I need to do for the switch and what oil filter would be the best to run (still have the stock set-up, no by-pass filter yet). Does anyone have any experience/opinion with the Fleetguard Strapore vs. the standard Fleetgard oil filter? I have been using Mopar filters the whole time but since I'm changing oil I may as well try a better filter? I figure since Fleetguard and Cummins are one of the same the filter should be more then adaquate, right?

Also, I don't have any experince with synthetic oils prior to this but I do know that I don't have to change the oil as often as I did running Delo (every 4000-5000) right? What's the BESTway to check the condition of my oil?

Any and all info/opinions would be appriecated. :D

Stratapore filters are better than the standard Fleetguard filter. I think the Mopar filter and the Fleetguard standard filter are the same thing. An oil analysis is the best thing to do to check the condition of your oil.

I was told by Amsoil to use 2 bottles of their engine flush

before doing the swap. Follow the directions and drain hot.

I did and then drained it and added the StrataPore filter.

On a side note to changing the oil. A 5 gallon bucket from

a pizza place worked great as a drain pan :) When done

place the lid on it and take it for recyling. A 2-1/2 gallon

would have worked a little better since my truck barely

cleared it but it worked great. No mess and holsd all the

oil.

I did exactly the same thing. Went from Delo 400 and Stratopore filters at 33K miles to Amsoil 15W-40 HDD&M and the Amsoil SDF80 oil filters. I also used 2 bottles of their engine flush. I just changed oil and filter this morning as a matter of fact, 76,394 total miles so far. Since I went to Amsoil, I change oil filters every 5K milesa, and the oil every 10K. I send in samples every filter change. According to the reports, my engine is in fantastic shape so far :D
