How much oil usage should I see per thousand miles?

I have a friend that is somewhat of a Ford guy and said I really need to watch the oil level in my diesel because of the usage. He stated all the problems his company had with the PS engines including the one he owned that used 3 quarts between oil changes since new. I thought he was bashing diesels because he now owns a V-10 Ford but I was looking at the dieselstop and according to this link he may be right?

Oil Usage

The reply to this guy's post is that 1 quart per 900 miles is normal?

I have only 3000 miles on mine and it hasn't used any that I can tell. Is this only a Ford thing?

My old 93W250 on Amsoil 15w40 didn't drop 1/2 a pint in 12k between changes. My 03 so far with 6500 miles Two 3k oil changes dosen't appear to have drop ANY. I have had a number of Powerstroke folks tell me theres go through several quarts between changes?

I am utilizing 15W-40 Synthetic with a by-pass oil filtration system. I installed at 8,500 miles after two oil changes. I now have 22,000 miles and I just added my first 1/2 qt. I might add that 4 oz. of oil was taken for an oil analysis as well.

These are SUPER trucks!

I have had 3 CTD's since '94 and have never added any oil between changes. Ford has a new system that adds diesel fuel to the oil to keep the level at least on the full mark all all times.

Dang, if that Ford isn't at the leading edge of technology. What will they think of next? :D

We were almost a quart low after 1500 miles, but have not added any between oil changes after that.

Ford always has a bettah Idea, now they automatically keep the oil level "where it oughtta be". ;)

Not a drop!

I almost wish mine used a little oil as I'm on extended oil changes and want to add as much make-up oil as possible when the filter gets changed.

It doesn't lose any oil, nada, ever... . nothing that can be measured anyway. It must have burnt some oil while breaking in but I honestly don't ever remember adding oil to the rig.

What was the reason you didn't wait till the recommended 20,000 before switching to synthetic? I thought synthetics were too slick for a "new" engine.

Well Crunch, we all don't agree on everything here. The main thing is to get the rings seated before you use synthetics, everything else needs the slick stuff as soon as possible. I change about 1200 to 1500 mi. , then if it doesn't use any oil in the next 3 or 4K, I figure the rings are seated and ready for the slick stuff. Now those miles are hard pulling miles, not just cruising around empty. I've done that to 3 Dodges now, and haven't had any problems, ran one to 312K, one to 220K, and have 86K on the 03 now. Its whatever you think is best, your the one you have to satisfy. JMHO,

mine is using oil 25 gallons every 450 miles:D

just kidding mine uses oil maybe 1/2 quart every 5000

i have 22000 on her. the usage is slowing. but now this i have switched to syn. my consumption has remained 1/2 every 5000. i like the idea of putting fresh oil in it. of course i have a leaking valve cover gasket so i lose a good bit of oil there.

Had a shop teacher some years ago when I was in high school make the statement that he would like to see a new engine use a little oil between changes. I bought a 95 Z71 new, and from the first oil change it always would use about 1 pint at every 3000 mile oil change all the way up to when I sold it at 69,000 miles. The 03 CTD I have now, I changed oil twice since new is just barely off the full mark maybe 1/4 inch at each change. Heck I may be loosing it off the dip stick as often as I check it. :-laf

mine has never used a drop and I do drive it like I stole it! Changed factory fill at 1000k, then another at 5k (after trip to michigan) and then every 6k after. Oh I also only used dino oils until 18k then went to delvac 1

oil usage

My 99 used such a small amount between oil changes, that it was'nt even worth mention. My 04 does'nt seem to use any at all, with over 8000 mi. on it so far.

My old 1984 ford with the 6. 9 diesel, on the other hand, thought that it was single handedly supposed to keep Mobil Oil Co. in business. Seems you could'nt drive to the grocery store and back without adding more oil. FWIW

Your old Shop teacher told you that as a excuse when engines use oil. Thats a old line thats been around years. Kinda like a urban legend!!!

I have a 2001 and 2003 Ram neither of which use any oil to speak of between changes. I do have a 93 F350 with the 7. 3 that used a quart of oil every 1000 miles since it was new till I overhauled the engine at 180,000. Complained to the selling dealer over and over again about it but was always told that it was normal for the engine to use oil! No more Fords for me! The Cummins engine is far superior to any Ford engine I have driven.

My '86 Ford 6. 9 diesel burned a quart every 900 miles empty and a quart every 600-750 miles when working. I was also told this was a normal condition by two dealers. My last Ford. I have never added a bit of oil between changes to my CTD's since 1994 when I switched brands:) .
