Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil visible in turbo inlet!

Ok as i was workin on my bro-inlaws truck we pulled the intake tube off and i could see blackish oil covering the silencer ring, no oil in the intake tube, so i take off the silencer ring and could see that the oil was in behind as well and the inner cooler hose goin from the turbo to the inner cooler i can see alot of oil seepin out of the hose clamp! The turbine wheel has some play but it has more play than i think it should! Any ideas on what might be happening?

Sounds like it time for a new turbo. My truck did the same last summer, had to replace the turbo. Good Luck.

The seal is leaking, any shaft play will start to wear it out untill it just blows it completely and will dump oil everywhere when it happens.

Yep, I found that a while ago. I did have a teeny bit in the outlet side rubber hose. Called the wrench, and he called me back and said not to start the truck.

If it gives, it can runaway - run off the oil in the engine until it's gone. Then boom. My pal lost his 2 months ago, came real close to that. pulled a gallon out of the muffler. If it had leaked to the other side, man.

So use caution, and good luck!

Anyone else ever have this?

I'm cleaning up my turbo and looking at the possibility that I have a seal leaking too. From what I've read in searches on this site, if it is leaking it probably is better to replace/upgrade the turbo rather than having the existing one serviced. Good excuse to get a better turbo too if I can just figure out a way to keep my exhaust brake. Sound's like your bro-in-laws leaks much worse than mine. I have a ongoing thread about it somewhere near. Other than cleaning it up and (for me) running a standard paper air filter for awhile and rechecking it, I don't know of another way to confirm a leak at that bearing. Good luck and keep us posted. I'd like to know how your's turns out.

Yeah, just a side note, I talked to a mech friend of mine who drives a Powerstroke and he was suspicious of a turbo bearing seal going bad too so for quite awhile he drove around with one eye on the road and the other in the rear view mirror watching the exhaust. He said if the seal does completely fail, you'll know it by a significant increase in smoke from the tailpipe. If your broinlaw is forced to drive it until he can fix it... I would be watching it closely. Good luck
