oil way over full FAST

got latest reflash and new turbo 30 days ago then drove to montana. oil change light came on so took my oil and fleetguard filter to lube shop. reset the oil change reminder and 240 miles later light came on so I checked oil level and it was half inch over full. I freaked... . nobody ever changed the oil in my truck but me and I never had this happen. took it back and had them drain it all out and add 10 qts. drove 600 miles and change light is on and dip stick shows way over full. Im 2000 miles from my dealer (who I trust) and got no idea whats up. something pumping diesel into my crankcase... . reflash screwing up or new turbo problems. any help or suggestions would realy be appreciated

You might check for fuel in your oil.

1/2 inch is not "way" overfull. Typically a cracked injector will add a gallon of fuel to your crankcase in about 20 miles. That's not what you're describing. You would also be able to smell the diesel in the oil.

I have never seen an oil change light come on that fast. Are you sure it was reset? The dealer can look with the scan tool and see the last time it was reset. Remember there is no "sensor" in the crankcase so the oil change light would not know if the level was rising. It turns on based on duty cycle, and I can't think of any duty cycle short of low speed arctic conditions that might make it come on even close to those mileages.

If they are draining the crankcase without removing the fill cap and letting it set for at least 15 min. , there is your problem. It is not getting a full drain. Like said above, most likely you are not getting the computer reset.

I agree with the above poster and have a question for you. Who is resetting the oil change indicator? You or the lube shop? If the lube shop then you need to reset the oil change indicator yourself.



I have found through experience that you need to change your own oil regardless where you are. I use to have my local Dodge dealer do it and they did an excellent job. Chrysler closed this dealership since they only sold Dodge and gave the Dodge franchise to the Chrysler dealer. Went to them for an oil change. When the truck was completed with the oil change, ( I could watch from the waiting room) I asked the service manager why they did not grease the front drive shaft. The answer was there is no grease fitting to grease. I asked if I could show them and they responded, no Insurance regulations would not allow me into the shop. I also noted there was not a grease gun anywhere near the oil change rack.

I check the dipstick after the oil change in the dealer lot and it was overfilled by the dealer. The Chrysler dealer was use to gas engines and not the Cummins diesel engine and waiting for it to drain. So I now do it myself.

I reset after oil change as I have done for 77k miles. checked oil this morning and its just plain way over full. I have done my own maint. since day one and never showed over full once. the change oil warning light and over full on dip stick has me worried being so far from my dealer. I stood right there and watched them drain the oil second time... . start it up for a minute or so then shut it down for a few min then check dip stick. it showed right at top of safe mark. after 600 miles (all interstate) light goes on and oil level 1/2 to5/8 inch over safe mark. If I go to a dealer up here what test should I have done to check for problems? Remember, I had 12 qts and fleetguard filter change, then crank case drained and 10 qts added which should have put me at 11 qts in motor and now its way full after 600 miles. this isn't right and Im kinda freaked out. Many thanks for your time guys.

I'd drive it another 300 to 600 miles and check the oil level again after it sat with the engine off for about 15 minutes. If it keeps building up, get it to the next nearest Dodge dealer. Are you sure it's not antifreeze in the oil?

I have checked the oil 20-30 times in the last couple of days and its still black. No sigh of milky water oil mix. I dont smell any fuel either so Im at a loss. gonna leave truck at dealer in Livingston Montana... . they seem to think injector problem. sure appreciate all the info and advice. you guys are the best--I value your replys, keep em coming

I might buy an injector is causing the oil level to rise rapidly, but there is no way the oil change light can be set off by a bad injector. The oil change light is driven by an algorithm in the controller based on duty cycle. There is no "sensor" that measures anything at all.

You are not letting it stand long enough with the fresh oil in it. It takes over 15-30 min for the oil to drain down on an engine and oil that is thoroughly warmed up. My bet is, still not letting it drain long enough with the fill cap removed when they drain it. It will hold over a quart in the head, passages, etc. . if you don't let air in from the top.
