I know this is a old subject. My brother found a barrell of oil at Costco ,but it says CI instead of CI4 plus. Will this be ok to use in 03 and 04. 5 Dodges.

I told him that I thought it was to old . . Thanks for the help.

It will work fine in the 03. The 04. 5 will work also, however it may possibly cause the catalytic converter to stop functioning with time (meaning you possibly wouldn't pass a smog test, it won't affect the truck otherwise)...

The CI was the older designation, and was upgraded to CI+4 when the 04. 5s entered the market (less additives that can harm the catalytic converter). The CJ-4 was introduced in 07 (?) for the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) equipped engines.

Personally, I've ran CI in my 04. 5 before; mainly because the oil hadn't caught up to the truck sales at the time... and if you need oil, you use what's available. My kitty ran away a long time ago, so I never worried about the CI/CI+4 thing.

If it were me, owning an '03, I'd be running it in a heartbeat (assuming it's a national brand 15w-40).

Refer to Steve's comments regarding the 2004. 5.

My only other suggestion would be to make sure you stir it up well... sitting that long, things might have dropped out of suspension.

I bought of 55 gal drum of Valvoline Classic Blue CI-4+ last year. There will not be any CJ-4 oil entering my engine for a very, very long time.

I think you got a great deal!
