Okay, so I didn't read my owners manual. Now in the TDR it say to use only 10w/30 in summer.
Well I have used the old standard Vavoline 15/40 for 120,000 miles. Except in the winter
when I use 5/40 Rotella. Hope I'm not in trouble here. Any comments?
I tow all the time and temps are warm. Thanks all.

I’d change it up to 10w-30 or 5w-40 year round. Cummins has seen some lifter issues with 15w-40.

The issue is at startup, so colder starts with 15w-40 are the hardest on the lifters.

Okay, but this engine is using two quarts in 10,000 miles. My other four Rams 99, 03, 12, 18 didn't.
I think with the thinner oil it might use more between changes.

AH64ID,

Does the 5W40 recommendation apply to a 2005 5.9L also?

Gary

The lighter oil recommendation is for the 19+ motors with hydraulic lifters.

18 and older are still recommended to use 15w-40 or 5w-40 synthetic.

Only one way to find out. That’s a lot of oil, does the motor have a lot of blowby?

Lots of oil used for such a short mile engine.
My 608K mile engine barely uses any at all, never enough to make me have to add any between 15K oil changes.

And, yes, on the new generation engine, I would sure use the recommended oil, either the 10w30 or 5w40 year round.

Looking into the specs a little more the conventional 10w-30 is thinner at 40°C (81.8 vs 90), but has a higher CFPP (-43°C vs -51°C) than the synthetic 5w-40. That's comparing the Shell oils in the Bulletin.

Can you read this PI sheet on the Premium Blue synthetic blend 10w-30 and compare specs so an oil dummy can understand. Just tell me if is good or bad, lol
It is Greek to me.

A quick glance on their website appears as tho they (Valvoline) tweaked the formula over the standard Premium Blue to be able to meet the latest requirements for spark ignition engines.
