I understand that the oil gauze filters i. e. amsoil, k&n etc flow more air. But at what cost. When I was a boy all of the farm equipment used oil bath air filters. Then Donaldson came out with a pleated paper air filter and every manufacturer changed to paper. The paper was touted as being much more efficent and clean than the old oil bath. Now I know there is a fundimental differnce between the old oil bath and the oily gauze but it seems to me we are taking a GIANT step backward. Less filtering may be ok for some but those of us that pull for a living seldom see ideal conditions. There is also the issue of oil contamination of the charge air cooler. The more oil on the inside of your intercooler the less efficancy. The charg cooler being one of the most important reasons that the little 5. 9 is able to produce the power it does. I would like a explanation from someone that has access to test equipment. Untell then I remain skeptical. And still using the K&N.

If oil coated air filters are a "step back", then I guess we should all remove our oil filters, ala Pontiac in the fifties, and run oil bath air filters and no oil filters at all. Progress. SIGH!

I also remember oil filled air filters on tractors and older Jeeps. We bought a brand new Jeep Wrabgler a couple of weeks ago and were surprised when we opened the air filter box. Jeep uses a paper and foam air filter that is sprayed with some type of an oil similar to motorcycle chain lube. I thought someone had played a joke on me so I called the dealer and he explained that Jeep was the only vehicle DC made that has an air filter that is impregnated with oil at the factory. In my opinion it doesn't flow air very well so we are about to discard it and buy a K&N.

Be carefull, oil coated after market air filters that are not certified for use by Cummins/DC my void your warranty.

The reason I was told that the manufactures went from oil bath filter to paper filters was to make money. Think about it. It was a way for the dealer to make money and get you coming back to the store. Oil bath filters did not make for repeat sales. Paper ones do.

On my old Corvairs, the oil bath filter was an option for cars operated in a dusty environment. They then had an oil bath prefilter and then paper filters.
