It is true that you can pull up some of the archives but what about the PRE-UPDATED ARCHIVES?!? I can't find any, and an oversight like this NEEDS ATTENTION!

There is a lot of info that is still useful to us, the members, so lets get on it!!!

Please read the announcement at the top of the threads in this forum regarding the upgraded server that will be installed soon. The archives have been taken off line to help alleviate the Server is busy messages that plagued the system right after the change over.

Thanks much for the quick response... about how long??? It seems as if the server has been in service for awhile now.

I also have experience configuring servers/IT, and the bugs should be about out by now. I know how hard it can be, especially integrating differing platforms, but just trying to light a fire and keep you IT/Admin type guys 'honest'. :p

Please don't forget us who use it. ;)

That's all listed in the announcement I pointed you to, here it is since you couldn't find it:

Server Upgrade (07-16-2001 until 08-16-2001)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the status on the server upgrade:

The server was ordered last week. Installation from the time of order is a week to 15 days. After that, we are going to run a two week transition and test on it before we switch.

For those interested the new system is setup with the following hardware:

- Dual Pentium III 1 GHz Processors

- 1 gigabyte RAM

- 2 36 gigibyte SCSI hard drives

- 100 Mbit Ethernet

- Tier 1 service provider (Digital Nation)

I'm a user here just like you, only difference is that I volunteer my time to help moderate the site. My understanding is that it's not a bug nor configuration issues - this server was tuned as best as could be done. There needed to be an entire new server put into place. This was announced in the past and that announcement is just the latest. I believe Ken is doing everything he can to make timely announcements regarding the updates, you must have just been missing them.

The boards were pruned to about 6 months ago. Along with the old archieves being removed.

The webmaster is working on "The old boards will be brought back online soon, with closed registration and no user ids installed... . so users can view old posts... ... "

How long will it take? I don't know I am not the one doing it. Please remember Ken is a part time consultent, and some of the changes take a fair amount of time to code, test, etc.

It wasn't an oversight, it was done to help the performance of the current server. As said above it'll be a whole new ballgame once the hardware upgrade is complete.

Does this answer it any better?

More status...

The server hardware was installed today. We hope to have it tested and configured for a switch Saturday morning. Downtime should be less than an hour.

The new server runs like a scalded dog. It'll be worth the wait. We'll be enabling GZIP compression on the new server with should compress pages 80-90%. Modem users will see a dramatic increase in speed, especially for large pages.

Thanks KatDiesel for the response. Yes, that clears it up, and your response feels less caustic than Steve's reply (although I thanked him too!!!)

Anyone else reading this and getting 'flamed', don't bother. You can't take life TOO seriously and I am definitely NOT starting a pi$$ing match with this one!

Man, I love the 'bantering' here! :p :p :p

Besides, NOW we know MORE than what Steve was trying to point me to. Info is a GOOD thing! But if you think about it, we still don't have the archives. Oh well, maybe someday! ;)
