Ok guys, we REALLY need some help here. My brothers '92' (he is a TDR member, just doesn't do 'puters' well)

Is now on his 9th, yup 9th, PS pump.

So far he has put in 7 brand new

which leaked withing 3 days to 4 weeks, put in 1 re-built, same result, and one more brand new one INCLUDING a brand new vacuum pump, just in case it was the cause even though testing said IT was ok.

Now this last time DC who has done all the work said come back so we can give you all your money back, including another new pump which should carry you for another week:eek:

He is DESPERATE here guys !!!!

Calls to DC service H. O. , have yielded no new ideas.

The re-built broke the chain of new pumps and the possibility of a bad batch.

It leaks from all sorts of places. One time it leaks from the front end were it joins the vacuum pump, another time it leaks from around the resivoir, other times it leaks all over the place.

Its been put on the pressure tester/simulator repeatedly to check high press. side/low pressure side,,, the works.

I know there are some rocket scientists in the group. . ANY ideas are welcome at this point.

Thanks on behalf of myself and my brother 'Woodie'.

I have no idea what is going on, but it sounds to me like the problem is NOT the pump. I mean you would have to have an EXTRAORDINARY run of really foul luck to go through that many PS pumps. It makes me think something else is the problem and the resultant pain is showing up as the PS pump failure.

When the first one was replaced who replaced it? It sounds to me like something was screwed up in the first replacement which no one else has yet caught.

Keep us advised.

Maybe the way the pump is mounting on the gearset is not concentric to the gear shaft??? I dunno?? I'm thinking that the mount is not flat and contorting the pump body.

Just a thought.

Something like that must be going on. Something simple which no one has caught yet.

Either that or evil spirits have taken up residence in the PS system. You might try an exorcism!

AGR

Although I bought a re-manned pump within the last 10K miles, I really wanted to buy the AGR steering pump and gear. I've seen these units in other heavy off-road vehicles, and they have been unbreakable (leakable... ).

Do a search for AGR Steering on Yahoo or something, and you'll see the full line of producs.

I know our pumps suck (pun intended), but 9 seems extraordinary.

just my two bits.

I have to agree with you guys... this is really out there it terms of possibilities.

rrausch, :-laf :-laf :-laf

I never thought of the exorcism option... . LOL thats so bizarre that it would probably work.

In all seriousness though, we are at the point of looking for the 3rd and 4th removed root cause type of thing resulting in progressive damage ending at the PS pump

Any ideas, no matter how theoretical are welcome. Sometimes answers come from the most obscure comments/observations.

Sleep on it guys. This is outta hand.

On another point, after having his newest pump put in, the truck wouldn't start. After several mechanics leaned over the fender in deep thought another one got in and turned the key... presto,, flashed right up.

My brother got about 1 block and she quit. Finally got started and leapfrog'd back to the dealer. When they opened the hood there was fuel all over the drivers side of the engine/PS pump (NEW ONE!)

Long story short... the plug at the back of the pump loosened off and was puking fuel.

My brother says since they tightened it, it has never run so good.

Go figure.

Oh, BTW, he said he refused to sell it. Talk about dedicated:D

Keep the ideas coming.

just some thoughts....

did the same person install the pump each time?

Is there a link kinked somewhere? a valve stuck?

is pump mpounted straight?

is vacuum pump seized or dragging?

Does it turn smoothly with wheels off ground with engine on and off?

are any components binding to cause excess pressure buildup?

Watch pump with engine running and turn wheels slowly back and forth each way?

Is it possible any of the lines may have been hooked up backways or crossed?

Are you using right fluid and filling pump correctly?

I'm no rocket scientist, but these are just thoughts.

Good Luck... Max Blair

P>S> I'm interested in the outcome of this as my pump is leaking

and I have some binding somewhere. From what I've read, I'm guessing my u joints on front are stiff.
