Ok i got a big problem... :{

On my way to work this morning i my truck started sputering like it was running out of fuel... even though i had a quarter of a tank. .

after checking my feul filter, the drain valve and everything else i realized there is still fuel in my truck

I think maybe the lift pump, but i am not a mechanic at all. .

the only thing i know is when i turn on my key, that whine you hear when you turn on the key is not there...

any help would be appreciated...

thanks guys:{

Not good, the 01's have had more lift pump failures than any other year. Good news the warranty will cover it. :)

Its the lift pump. I just had mine replaced last week and it was doing the exact same thing. Mine died and I had to get it towed. You better get it in fast or your going to get stranded. It is covered under the 100k warranty.

Could be the relay. It is under the hood on the drivers side on top of the fender (wheel well).

I pulled my truck in the garage the other day. It cranked longer than normal when I started it. So once I had it in the garage I cycled the starter (engine off) and the pump would try to run, but, it just sputtered.

Anyway, I opened the relay/fuse box, pulled the relay and placed it back in. Cycled the starter again and the pump was running like a champ. I then removed the relay again and put some dielectric grease on the contacts.

I checked pressure with a test gauge, all was good. I need to install a gauge in the cab.

All 24 valves really should have a fuel pressure gauge.

C. beat me to the reply. Thats the exact same thing that happened to me after I just replaced my lift pump. replaced the relay and pump runs good.

The News

Well the stealer called yesterday, and sure enought it was the lift pump...

i have two questions

first, is this new lift pump they put on the same one that was on it, or is this one going to work any better

Second, has anyone else had to pay for the diagnostic technition or did i just get screwed... i had to shell out $250 because the dealer said that dodge wouldn't cover the little guy from cummings to plug in his computer for fifteen minutes and tell them the same thing i told them... . this info came from the regional manager as well, i discussed it with him before paying... .

p. s. thanks guys for all the info prior to me going to the shop, you all hit the nail on the head

If your dealer took the truck to cummins to have it diagnosed and your under warrenty, sorry but, then you just got screwed. It's not your problem that the service rep couldn't diagnose something that they have been trained to do.

Ron

I think paying $250. 00 is a bunch of BS!! I wouldnt have paid it. I would get on the horn and get your money back. Oh yea it CUMMINS not cummings :D

Why did they have to even plug it in? Why could they not just put a test gauge on to check your fuel press. before going any farther. Any thing to get money out of you those sorry $%$%$.

got my money back

i guess the squeakiest wheel gets oiled first, after talking to about 6 different people i got my money back

This is a whole new truck, so i wonder how long this pump has been going out... drives different, better accleration better milage

thanks for all the info guys

I'm on my third pump in 33,000 miles or in 1 Year. I called Cummins Mid South yesterday and was told that there were 1200 plus # 3990105 transfer pumps on back order. The parts manager also stated that this was unexceptable failures, sense I've also replaced an injector pump at 60,000 miles.

One of there mechanics thinks there could be a restruction in the tank or in the fuel lines.

The parts guy is trying to get me a pump for monday, I hope.

I do not know if there is a restiiction in the line or in the over flow vent but my vent is open and does not have a cap over it like some of the early trucks had.

So Long Cummins.....

My relocated stock lift pump went out again last week. I flipped my emergency reserve switch on the dash to turn on my backup Summit pump and drove it to the dealership. Once there, I looked out on the lot and found an brand new gasburner flame red 1 ton dually 4x4 that looked terrific. Leather and ALL the options... .

Traded the '99 diesel dually that same day. The 360 gas burner engine was "free". It drives and smells great. I didn't care to wait for the new Daimler/Nissan '03 mini crew cab one ton trucks. The short stubby rear doors make the long bed trucks look misproportioned to my eyes. I'm sure I will eventually miss my (Bombed) old diesel. :( I just won't miss this pathetic never ending lift pump debacle. IMO, this has already hurt and will continue to hurt future Ram diesel sales. When will Daimler wake up???

Seems a shame to lose your reputation over a little fuel pump!

Incredible. That pump issue will end up costing DC MILLIONS in sales when people get scared off & buy a FORD or a CHEVY!

Guess we cant help it if they are STUUUUUUPID!

Are you watching big bro? Your dumb.

I hear you, I drive around 20K miles a year, which means that I have all most 3 years of warranty left on my truck. If Dodge does not come up with a good solution I will be trading when the warranty gets close. Hope they figure something out, cause I love this truck :)

I cant believe you traded your truck because of a $140. 00 lift pump. Even if You had to replace them 2 times a year your still going to be way ahead of the amount of fuel your going to pay in the gasser. Anyway, each to his own! :D
