Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) OK...Mega Cannon Installed But...

is it supposed to sound like an airplane inside the cab?? Boy oh boy its loud!I hear a nice whistling up till about 6 pounds of boost then its a whistle drowned out by a rush of air. I am assuming this is normal?

I put 15 miles on a smaller AFE CONE filter before I sold it because of the 727 under the hood kind of noise. It is normal. If you like it more power to ya.

You should hear it in a truck with a manual transmission making about 33# of boost when shifting. :--)

Yeah, and try an HX40 that doesn't have the silencer ring Waaaay too much whistle and whine for my tastes.



I'll keep the filter, but I'm changing the compressor housing.

Heck, with my K&N RE-0880 and bone stock HX40, I hear the turbo whistle at idle!!



I personally love the 747 on takeoff velocity sound

HX-40 is louder yet? Maybe I should get one of those... I just cant get enough whine with my cheese

I love the whistle, Im not sure about that rushing of air sound just yet. It sounds like an industrioal sized fan blowing air around. Pretty nice filter though. I gotta hook myself up with a nice Ultra Lite Pyrometer now so I can monitor my EGT's!

When I bought my truck used, you couldn't hear the turbo until you really laid on it. Installed K&N filter- a little better, adjusted the valves- alot better, removed ring and . Screamin' demon. Next, 4' exhaust and bye-bye muffler .

Man,I wish my turbo was even louder. Is there a such thing as to much turbo whine? I cant get enough. With my B1 and an open downpipe the turbo was so loud it almost hurt my ears,I loved it,but as soon as i hooked up the exhaust it got quieter .

Some HX40's are louder. It depends on the compressor housing. The one I got has no silencer ring and is not designed to have one.



The ones you get from Piers typically have an HX35 housing that has been machined to accommodate the larger pinwheel on the 40 and has the silencer ring. Or they will have a true HX40 housing but one set up with the silencer ring.



I'm getting a machined 35. Al says there will be no change in performance, just a quieter turbo.

See this is my problem. I plan on Injectors and a Torque Plate soon and with all those EGT's I was planning on going to a Scotty II intake because of how much cool air it draws, but a Scotty II is like the mother of all 747's in your cab from what I have heard.



Usually I don't care because I can just crank the stereo up and its drowns out the whistle from my BHAF with silencer ring but like today on the way back from Chattanooga TN with the G/F I couldn't crank the stereo cause the g/f was almost in la la land and I was crusing @ just over 70. Just backed out of it a little and the whine went down to a more acceptable level

Why did this have to show up the same day I ordered mine? I knew they were noisy but have not heard these complaints before. My stereo speakers are shot anyway so I guess I'll have some new music to listen to. Wife will wonder what the new noise is, she wandered why I needed a new air filter when she ordered it.

Installed mine today and the noise is a lot louder than expected. Probably wouldn't be too bad for those that don't drive their truck a lot. It did drop egt by about 100 degrees though. I'm going to pull a heavy load and see how it is on a trip. Might need earplugs.

Yea, it's LOUDER! BUT I DON'T HEAR IT ANY MORE.

Actually it is louder than I wanted, and my wife says that went I use the exhaust brake it sounds like the noise is originating between her ears!

I do like the EGT results, but am looking for a way to swap my battery and locations. Cooler air and less noise. Maybe go to something like what Whitmore did to his truck.
