CUMMINS TO SUPPLY UP TO 6,780 ISB ENGINES IN FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS FOR U. S. POSTAL SERVICE
COLUMBUS, IN - 9/22/2000
Cummins Inc. today announced that it will supply ISB engines for chassis manufactured by Freightliner Custom Chassis, to be supplied to the United States Postal Service.
"We are pleased to announce this significant opportunity to supply the fuel-efficient ISB engine as standard power for the USPS step vans," said Jonathan Evans, national accounts manager, Cummins. "The postal service has a reputation of dependability, and the ISB will help keep that reputation strong for years to come. "
The units will be the source of power for multi-purpose step vans, which the postal service will use. These vehicles are multi-stop delivery walk-through vans with a 4,000-pound payload capacity.
Delivery of the 6,780 ISB-powered units will take place over the next three years.
Production for the order will begin this year, with 2,380 units to be built by the end of 2001. The remaining quantity of up to 4,400 units is to be produced in 2002 and 2003 under an option to extend the contract by the postal service. The ISB engines are certified to the EPA's Clean Fuel Fleet Vehicle (CFFV) Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) standard.
The ISB is a fully electronic in-line 24-valve diesel engine that provides outstanding performance and reliability. In addition to superior fuel economy, the Interact™ System makes diagnosing and servicing the engine extremely efficient.
