When was the changeover to the good pump and how can I tell the good pump from the less-good pump? What problems should I look out for on a 94?

Ok... You caught me still unpacking boxes at the new place and getting the PC up and running with the new ISP. Here goes. .
I'd look for a '96 to '98 215 hp pump, off of a 2023 or 2175 CPL engine. I don't have the serial #'s handy. The earlier pumps were on the 170 hp motors.

Uh oh; drove a new 3500 with 4. 10 rear. It was a DOG! My 89 would chew it up and spit it out. It took FOREVER to spool up. The computer is OBVIOUSLY programmed to protect the weak 618 transmission! If I get a Gen 2, it WON'T be an ISB! I'll either get a 98 and put ALL of the transmission upgrades from BD, or I'll go outside of Mother MOPAR.
 
Thanks; there's a bunch of 'em for sale around here right now. Looking for something with leather! Sure would be cheaper than the new Chevy. If only it had an Allison... ... ... .

I drove the new Chevy yesterday; it's everything they say it is and more, especially the transmission;but I just can't see myself shelling out forty grand for a new truck, so I'm going to look at some 98's this week. Unfortunately, my wife has her mind made up on both a new truck AND a crew cab, so it looks like the losing battle boils down to Chevy or Ford. If the choice ends up that way, it will be the Chevy.
