Ok I have had the 610 QC/SB/48-RE/4x4 SRW 2500 Laramie for about one month now and towed with it for the first time (5200lbs for about 500 miles) and have had several tow and none tow fill ups. My old truck was an identical 04 555. First the good stuff:
Just more refined overall. I will tell you why:
-Better ride due to softer springs in the frt..... since I got rid of the snow plow package.
-The 48RE is MUCH smoother... . don't know why but torque converter lock-up is not nearly as violent, shift are smoother and the TOW HAUL is superior. So nice that is does not lock out O/D. Is it as good as the Allison? Maybe not due to one less gear, and sometime I have to "reset it" by clicking the button off and them on again but still way better than the old unit.
-610 is MUCH more quiet, no comparison. More power? Really I can't tell as I have yet to see how fast she pulls up the same grades as my 555... feels the same maybe even a little weaker but that might be due to the lack on noise and a smooth shifting transmission.
-Best of all NO vibration as speed..... a little Cummins hum through the frame but after this many miles I know the drive-line is smooth.
OK now for the bad:
The gas mileage at this point with just over 1000 miles seems to be behind that of the 555. In and around town I got 14. 9 hand calculated vs a typical 15. 4 for the old truck. What has me concerned is towing, getting in the low to high 12s at this point with the 555 getting a average of about 14. 1. What is worse is that on the old truck the computer was fairly accurate, this one is way off! I mean by as much as 3 mpg! Is there a way to reprogram the computer so it is in the ball park? I will have to wait till I get her broke in to make a true judgement on the matter however.
Oh yes the headlight still suck.
