Truck info: 2001 3500, 5 speed, 4. 10 gears LS, 255/85 BFG MT's (33's), Pulling clutch and Edge Comp for now.

So there I was Saturday night Second to pull, I select 3rd gear low range, run the rpm's up to 3400 and start letting out the clutch. When she's fully engaged I look and I've got 3000 rpm's. Could I go with a higher gear selection or are the lower RPM's telling me I am out of horsepower.

First place was a 12 valve 308 feet, Second was a duramax at 280 something, third was a 12 valve with a slipping clutch at 274, second and third may be vice versa, but there I was forth with 272', I was happy to beat every Ford and thrilled with the new clutch, what a blast it was doing that first pull with the dual disk. I figure with the closeness of the finishes it all comes down to wheel speed

In a five speed 4th is pretty high, could I turn it? What about 2nd high range, that's in between 3rd and 4th low right? I know I need more horsepower but I'm waiting to build up the reserves for the new turbo first before I go to big injectors. I've got a set of DD 2's coming for now.

With my upgrades currently I figure I'm probably just under 300 hp, what do you guys with 5 speeds pull in and what kind of horsepower do you have, by the way that track was soft but the next one is a tight track (where I smoked the clutch last year)

What kind of horse power does 4th low need? How about 2nd high?

with 4. 10 gears you are pretty much limited to 3rd. low or 2nd. high. 3L being slightly more reduction than 2H. 4L takes about 6-700 hp to turn. When we still had a 5sp in the pulling truck we used to pull in 4H. 3400 RPM is absolutely fine as long as you aren't spending most of the time against the gov. If it is then jump to 2H. this may be too much gear, but it really depends on the track.

Supersonic,

(Turbo Tim hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions also). I am at or around 450hp with the 4. 10's. Am I stuck with 3L or 2H? What is the difference between 3H and 4L?

Thanks

Thomas

I just made a cool little Excel spread sheet to calculate MPH based on engine RPM, tire size, NV4500 gear selection and Gear Ratio. According to my specs, based on 3400 engine rpm 33. 2 inch tires and 4. 10 gears here is the breakdown.

High Range

1st 14. 6 mph

2nd 27. 0 mph

3rd 49 mph

4th 82 mph

5th 111 mph

Low Range

1st 5. 4 mph

2nd 9. 9 mph

3rd 18 mph

4th 30 mph

5th 40. 7 mph

If somebody has different ideas please post them, from my math it's a big step really from 3rd low to anything else, 18 mph to 27 mph for second high and 30 mph for 4th low.

To answer your question Bloomy, 3rd high is 49 mph, thats huge.

If anyone wants a copy of the spread sheet let me know, you just have to enter your engine rpms, tire diameter in inches and axle gear ratio and it calculates everything else for you. I actually answered a few of my own questions by making the sheet.

I not a pro but I pulled this weekend in 4th low with brand new toyo m/t's and I have 3. 54 gears with 37/13. 50 tires. The last time I dyno'ed I made right at 500hp

According to my sheet which I just added 6 speed numbers to, at 3400 rpm with 3. 54's and 37's you should be able to go 28 mph with that setup. This is some good information, thanks guys.

Just wondering why my wheel speed would be at 28 mph if the 5spd had 4. 10's and 33's and did 30mph in 4th would'nt mine 6spd with 3. 54's and 37's be higher or is the transmission that far apart in gearing

T. J.

The 6 speed has a 1. 39 ratio in 4th where the 5 speed is 1. 00, if you go to 5th gear on the 6 speed with the 1:1 ratio you would end up at 39 mph with your tires and gears.

Send me your e-mail and I'll shoot you a copy of the spread sheet.

Last year I pulled several times in 4th low, with 285s,3:54 ratio leave the hole at 4500, 3300 down the track. Around 550HP.

2hi is weak.

3rd low needs 4500 rpm or big tires to compete with Chevys anymore.

Your best bet at this point Tim is to keep that gear, and start working on your hitch, traction bars, hanging weights, suspension stops. Before the breakage starts!! :D
