Crank the wheels to the right. Look through the fender/spring at the left side of the engine. The oil sender should be clearly visible. That's where it is on my '98 12V; I doubt the location changed much from earlier versions of the 6B.
 
Very interesting information. So how long do you think it takes with a Manuel oil pressure gauge to check oil pressure. I was told one hour. On the starter I was told that it was the easiest way to get to the sensor .So on warranty 24 minutes to changeout. Very interesting information

A mechanical gauge can be hooked up very easily on top of the oil filter adapter
 
I now have a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Guess I should have had on a long time ago. I already had the hose etc for a mechanical fuel pressure gauge so $ 20 for gauge. Cheap insurance. Oil sensor is changed out now. But I have learned a few thing about my Cummins Indy and dealers. The mark up on parts is tremendous . I guess it's one way for them to make more money but sometimes they get carried away. Also labor charges get crazy also.

I'm a Cummins dealer and I can assure you that the Cummins mark up IS NOT tremendous. Believe me.

We asked a couple of times for your ESN or Truck VIN because most likely the expensive sender comes up in the parts system and that's what you were quoted on.

As we mentioned and you found out there are cheaper senders but you kinda' have to know that. As you found out some did know and some did not.

Found it. The MOPAR sensor is $305.00...... That's what Indy and Napa were working off of.

Nobody was trying to pull your pants down on the parts at least. If you don't know these trucks one would assume that the sender was MOPAR, not Cummins.

BTW, the harness and cheap sensor that you were sold are not for the Dodge trucks. You are lucky that you didn't get a check engine light. You have a manual gauge now so it makes no difference.

But for anyone else watching this the CORRECT sensor that does not require a re-flash to work properly is the 4326849.

Here is a note from my internal business system starting in '03 and then updated in '06. I did update the part numbers but the statement holds true..

Interesting. I was quoted $305 from the dealer. But the Indy wanted $374. The Indy has told me he gets it for less than $305 but I don't know how much less. I do understand that in some cases you need a reflash if you use the Cummins part.Pretty expensive little switch in any case.
 
You missed what I said. They were marking up the 300.00 sensor from Mopar, not the 40.00 one. They mistakenly assumed the sender was Mopar, not Cummins and did not question it. That makes it around 25% which is about right.
 
No I do understand what your saying. But someone who works on Cummins diesels should know that Cummins has parts for theses motors as well. And should check on this also. To keep his customers happy and coming back . A 25 per cent mark up is very fair on a part that is a fair price. How can the dealer justify that big mark up. It's not right.and can't be good for customer relations to know your being severely taken advantage of just so they can make more money on you. It's not a good way to treat repeat customers.The Dodge dealer is blocks from the Cummins dealer in this town.
 
I also wonder if Mother Mopar ever updated the part number in their system. The oil pressure senders were pricy even from Cummins before the change in '03 as I recall.
 
And yes, they should have taken a bigger interest in checking for alternative sources. Could be a matter of a half *** quote by a dis-interested Service Writer who didn't ask anybody anything...
