Looking at getting a RV

EU2000 Question

I am looking at a truck camper with an aprox weight of 2,000lbs. I have the camper package on the truck. Will I also need air bags? Is weight ok with this setup?

Be wary of the advertised weight. Does the weight include propane, fresh water etc. Our Camper has a listed weight of around 3,000 lbs, but weighs a lot more with food, camping gear etc.

If the camper is 2,000 lbs total with all gear I would replace just the shocks and give it a try. You can always add the air bags or add a leafs later.

Have fun,

Greg

I think the camper package in 02 still included the leaf spring helper springs. See if there is brackets mounted to the frame above the springs that will contact the helper springs as the truck starts to set lower. If it does you will not need air bags with a 2000 lb camper. My slide in is 2000 lbs and I have carried it in my 98 2500 (with camper package) and my 02 3500 dually with no problems.

I had a Lance camper that showed a dry weight of 1,800 lbs. The air bags sure made the truck perform better when the camper was loaded.

Get the air bags. They are a cost effective addition to your truck and camper setup.

Yes, I do have the overload leaf in there as part of the camper package. I was planning on using Rancho Adjustable shocks also. I had those on my prior truck and currently have them on my CJ7 and really like the improved ride and handling they offer.

You should be fine just the way you are. You have a 2nd gen truck with the camper package which includes the overload leaf springs as well as the sway bar (3rd gen 2500's don't have the overload springs or rear sway bar). Try it first, if your not happy then worry about air bags.

I've got the Rancho's and really like them for towing. When hitched up, I put the rears on full stiff, and when empty put them on full soft. The fronts stay on 3.

I've got airbags and wouldn't have it any other way with my big ole Lance. It's a heavy sucker. I need to to the rancho air adjustable's, just been putting it off. Maybe this spring.
