Could the Old Birds fly as fast as the newer fighter jets????

The F-4 variants were capable of MACH 2. 20+ and the 105 was a little over 2. 0. Compare either of these to the F-15 and they (F4 and F105) would find themselves in a nasty hairball if up against an F-15, 18E, 14 etc. The genius in these birds is that they were workhorses and would bring you home when many others wouldn’t.

I think your grandson is very lucky because he has a grandfather like you And these jets are very cool although they become old and out of order but their stories remain the same

Thank you Byron for your kind words. The stories... there are many.

Boeing thanks for sharing the pics. The F-4 is a gorgeous aircraft. Lived under the downwind leg of Buckley in Aurora, Co. Watched these and A-7's many an hour. Were you an AF pilot?

My cool experience:

When I was a kid, I was in the San De Christo mountains and had the opportunity to watch a B-1 do nape of the earth training. That was pretty cool!

Good on ya for subsidizing your grandson's aviation dreams! I graduated high school and was kind of lost. My passion for planes and the desire to fly saved me. I found a bank that would lend a little cash to a dumb teenager and busted my private pilot out in short order. I have had my fair share of $150 cheeseburgers, (and damn was that a hell of a pick up line to the ladies, "Hey I am going flying this weekend, you want to go?".

Yet beyond that, I found that the training and the decision making matrix it produced, stayed with me. Still to this day, in tough situations I still say to myself: "just keep keep the nose up and the wings level".

F111A Was capable of 2. 5 ground level pretty fast!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah... And at three levels of ride comfort with the TFR (terrain following radar): Scary:confused: (soft); really, really scary:mad: (medium), and AW POOH-NUGGETS:eek: (hard)!!!

The F-111A didn't have an excess of engine power, but flying at altitude in
clean configuration with the wings swept back it was very fast, over Mach 2 --
the top speed being more limited by airframe tolerance than by propulsion and
aerodynamics. Operationally, the F-111A usually didn't break Mach 1, cruising
with wings extended and then sweeping them back for a low-level run at high
subsonic speed, flying at altitudes less than 300 meters (1,000 feet), and
running into the target area at altitudes of less than 100 meters (330 feet).
The F-111A could actually well exceed Mach 1 at low level, producing a shockwave
that would leave ruin in its wake -- a tactic that was never adopted because of
its complete lack of discrimination

watched an SR-71 take off from Kadena ,he pulled it vertical before the end of the runway, thats a 100,000lb airplane going straight up. now thats impressive

Don't know much about the 111, and I'm guessing it was capable of achieving 2. 5 but I think that would be more plausible at altitude, not G/L.

I think it was at altitude! for 2. 5 around 1. 5 GL. I dont know that much about them either other than it was my primary bird of training but got to work on sandy's,bird dogs 01,02 skymasters, 0V 10 broncos ALL THE HIGH TECH CRAP, for the duration of my senior trip to a far off and exotic land, we thought the 0V 10 was high tech IT WAS TURBOPROPS woooooooow!!!!! a jet motor

I didnt get to see it but our 111 squadron flew out of Takhli Thailand it was a RTAFB the last bombing mission they flew, the Commander buzzed Takhli at speed the town didnt have many windows to blow out but im sure the shacks didnt stand to well, I wish I could have seen that but was off in Germany having my own fun and dont even remember much of that!!

Uncle Fred USMC pilot in Korea flew Corsairs, got shot down twice, then learned jets still have a desk model of an FJ-3 Fury Jet Navy model. Have a Corsair basic manual that was in a ready room. Read thru a lot of his pilot log books one is signed by John Glenn, twice. He gave me his copy of "Pointy Talky" a multi lingual I need help phrase book. He has a silk pocket rescue map, beautiful condition. He has a lot of pics, memories and stories, carrier landings etc. Retired from Marines, later flight instructor for United 727's.

The F4U was a fantastic aircraft. I've had the experience of standing near one when he fired up the 18 jug PW Wasp. Nothing but brute power.

Absolutely NOTHING BEATS A RECIP CLEARING IT'S LUNGS ON FIRE UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best part of my Day was to fire up the Sandy's to make them alert ready Belching, Farting, smoking, leaking oil fuel until everything gets up to temp YA!! THAT WILL GIVE A YOUNG KID A STIFF-IE and then to Taxi them was out of control, Didn't have to go see the girls in town after that just light up a cigarette and relax. :-laf

Sounds foolish but I REALLY GOT OFF ON THAT!!!

I don't know the model of this 4 engine bomber, but PBS did a story on the two year long ordeal of a team that went to Iceland to uncover and fly it out. Changed engines, tires, long list. They would get one or two engines running in a day, etc. finally time to taxi and the APU tipped and caught fire, all was lost. But the sight of those monstrous radials coming to life, must have been like what BIG is referring to, I'd pay to be standing nearby just for that.

Couple of years ago at a breakfast flyin out in Ohio, they were selling rides, a Cessna and a thing called a Stearman. I asked what's a Stearman, guy pointed to the tail dragger. I was first in line, amazing.

Fred told me about one of his "unscheduled" landings, said when you can read Hamilton Standard (IIRC) when it should have been a blur pulling you along, it was a bad day.
