Old Diesel

Just received this from a friend of mine.

I just got a note from my farm fuel distributor that there has been a significant number of problems with additive deterioration in diesel fuel this winter. Apparently the problem is related to the slow down in diesel and kerosene consumption due to the drop in air travel and long storage times for refined fuels now being experienced.



Lower pressure injection systems in vehicles and farm equipment with the rotary Stanadyne, CAV and Bosch pumps are the ones seeing the brunt of the problems with particulate buildup on the injector pop off valves and nozzles.



Sounds like fuel injector cleaner will be in order for a while.

Good warning. This is also a good time of year to avoid buying winter mix diesel if you have a choice. In an effort to use up stockpiles of #1 many distributors will up the ratio so they don't have to store the #1 fuel till next winter. This equals less lubricity, power and mpgs for you.

interesting, I just replaced a carboned over injector on my 6. 5, it only had 5K miles on it, I wonder if this was the cause?. Bob

My mileage has gone to he((, maybe this is the root of the problem? Good excuse to buy 300hp injectors... just incase

Might be true, although I doubt it. I wouldn,t believe everything a local wholesaler tells you. They have a habit of being, shall we say a little shady. Our local wholesaler brought us some samples of some diesel he was going to buy from another wholesaler that had been in storage for five years! Needless to say, it was pretty much pea soup. I never heard if he bought it or not, but knowing him he probably did and mixed it up with fresh. I don't buy my fuel from him. Refining and Pipeline shipments are pretty much supply and demand anymore and long storage times are a thing of the past... ... ...

If that were true, why is diesel more expensive than gas???? Why has the price of diesel gone up $. 25 per gallon in the last two weeks????

Roy I cant say if the letter is true or not. But I think I read it differently than you did. It looks like to me that there is a surplus if storage times are longer.
