Ok guys.

Dad and my brother are building a power unit to run an auger on the farm via 540 PTO. They aquired an engine from a 750 Massey combine(aka Perkins 354). They had an adapter made to mate it to a truck transmission through a direct coupling. Tonight they get it up and running to report that the output of the trans is running counterclockwise facing the shaft from the rear!!!??? My brother verified smoke from the exhaust, and oil pressure, so its not running backwards on accident.

Did the Perkins 354 run counter clockwise in the combines??

I told them to go back out in the morning and start it again and verify rotation of the engine, and the output of the trans. Initially my brother thought the trans was the culprit, but I cannot imagine that, as there is a 1:1 gear ratio and it runs CCW. In reverse the output runs CW.

Does anybody know if the tractor 354 has the same block as the combine 354?

Michael

Facing the back of the engine they turn CCW. I'm 99% sure on that. We had several White combines that use that engine, one naturally aspirated, many turbo'd.

I ran the 3544 in a marine operation and it was CCW. It's fun when it goes in a direction you were not expecting.

Cheers Ken

OK, dad has decided that the engine is turning the usual way(I have not seen the project in motion). Output is CCW, and the PTO of the auger requires a CW rotation. Unfortunatly in this project we did not see this coming. :(

Where can a guy find a gearbox, 1:1 ratio, input on the front, output on the rear, that will change the rotation of the shaft, AND hold about 100-150hp?? I cannot think of any applications at this time.

Everything- rpm, engine speed, etc is correct, all we need now is to change from CCW to CW. Any ideas?

Michael

Boats? A direct inboard should have a gearbox with forward and reverse capable of holding that power. Would be really easy to clear a plugged auger too ;)

-Scott

Another idea... . turn the engine around so teh front faces the auger. Then run a belt off the crank to a pully on a driveline running to the auger. Effectively turn the engine around.

It may be more than you want to get into, but you could use hydraulics to reverse the drive direction.

I salvaged a 354 from a 510 Massey to power an H-190 Ag-Bagger, which is hydraulically powered. I used the combine bell housing and flex plate to direct drive the pump. The engine is now at least 15 years into its "second life" with only normal maintenance. I've no idea how many hours it ran on the 510.

FWIW

We really don't want to change the rotation of the engine, and I don't think the trans would like it, its lubrication probably wouldn't be effective running it opposite of designed rotation. And reverse gear is not the correct output speed.

I passed along the idea of the bolt and shaft running to the front of the engine.

We are currently looking for a tractor that has a stand alone PTO on the back, like a versitile, stieger, etc. These would probably change rotation and have the input/output where we need it.

I am still open to any ideas, and versitile/stieger owners/mechanics out there?

Yes the engine is turbo charged, we decided anything we look at needs to hold 150 hp, just to be safe.
