Bill Anders (one of the Apollo astronauts) lives nearby. He owns a P-51D Mustang (Allison V12), and he flies it a lot in good weather. You can hear it from 5 miles away. Whenever I hear it, I go running outside like a little kid. An incredibly soulful sound.
I remember going to the hydro races back in the '70's and '80's (pre-turbine era). The Budweiser boys were the only ones running the Rolls Royce 'Gryphon' V12, a fair bit more powerful (and much rarer) than the Allisons or Rolls 'Merlins'. They had a distinctly deeper, heavier exhaust tone... it was truly wonderful noise.
