Bill Anders (one of the Apollo astronauts) lives nearby. He owns a P-51D Mustang (Allison V12), and he flies it a lot in good weather. You can hear it from 5 miles away. Whenever I hear it, I go running outside like a little kid. An incredibly soulful sound.



I remember going to the hydro races back in the '70's and '80's (pre-turbine era). The Budweiser boys were the only ones running the Rolls Royce 'Gryphon' V12, a fair bit more powerful (and much rarer) than the Allisons or Rolls 'Merlins'. They had a distinctly deeper, heavier exhaust tone... it was truly wonderful noise.

For the '05 hydro races in Tri-Cities they brought out two vintage boats to run a few laps, the Griffon-powered 1980 Budweiser and Merlin-powered 1982 Atlas Van Lines

The incredible thunder from these 2000+ cubic-inch straightpiped V12s is nothing short of phenomenal. As loud as a top-fuel dragster but much more beautiful sounding. I got some video but the sound overwhelmed the mic on the camera, but I'll run it off for you anyway. No one can fully appreciate engines like these until they hear them in person

If I'm not mistaken, the Mazda 787B is the only Japanese car to have ever won the 24 Hours of LeMans. And, much like the Audi R10 it made a real stink with all the racing establishment. The 787B is a 4-rotor Wankel but I think it still spotted a fair amount of displacement to the other engines it ran against. An impressive machine. The Audi R10 is already longer and heavier than the gasser's it runs against and makes less hp but more torque. Now, with all the establishment upset about gettin' spanked the gassers get a 140 or so pound weight break and they'll be reducing the R10's fuel capacity for next year.

OK Ted I put two more hydroplane clips on this thread on NW Bombers (see bottom of my 2nd post). I was hoping the sound clips of the Rolls-Royce boats would be better but they were so freakin' loud it drove the mic into distortion. . . most of the clip the boats were 1/2 to 1 mile away. Anything closer and the mic didn't like it!



The second attachment is another of the U3 Cooper boat, running away from the turbines.

mmmm... . p port 21a... . , that thing has rev potential that some crotch rockets wish they had, i remember when they use to beat up on the 800+ hp v8s in road racing with their 600hp till they got outlawed

This is a great thread! I love to hear the music! EMD, that V16 was tops, the stereo separation was fantastic. I think that clip is off an old LP record, I know they made them years ago. The Renault video was impressive too, and I wish I could have that guy bring that rolls V-12 to my driveway for a demo to show my neighbors!

I am suprised nobody has mentioned a Nitro burning top fuel Hemi here. It might be more noise than music, but I think when experienced in person, it's the biggest total sensory assault that can possibly be experienced. These things are so loud, the volume cannot be captured or reproduced. Here's the best example I can find. I don't think anyone could keep their cool when this throttle gets blipped!

Pretty cool audio clips, but I have a few favorites as well...



Can't beat an old EMD 567... At the railyard here in Seattle, they have a few old SD9's they use down in the hump yard. What a great sound, even just at idle.



But I think my favorite has to be a consist of 5 SD40-2's climbing the eastbound 2. 2% grade up Stevens Pass on the way into the Cascade Tunnel. Especially when they start moving uphill again after sitting in the passing siding waiting for the tunnel to be purged. You gotta love the sound of a BIG 2-stroke diesel. I really don't like the sound of the new GE ES44DC's. They sound broken.



Of course, there is always the good ol' 12V71TTA and the 8V92TA. Incredible!

i kinda like the sound of the new evo engine. . under load, it sounds almost like an inline six engine due to the firing order [1r-1l-5r-5l-3r-3l-6r-6l-2r-2l-4r-4l] idling though, they go into skip fire, and drop out a cylinder or 2 while idling [the fdl 16 cylinder engines will shut down 12 cylinders during emissions skip idle - you can really hear the noisy top end of the engine then]

Of course, there is always the good ol' 12V71TTA and the 8V92TA. Incredible!

Thanks, this thread might turn into a little library of sorts. Its funny the ES44DC was brought up. I just got in from a freight pool trip back from Chattahoochee (no, not the mental hospital, but it is right across the street from the hotel we stay at). Anyway, my lead jack was an ES44DC and I gotta say I like 'em. Its about the 4th or 5th one I've run. The V12 is definitely smoother on the boil. Yes, they do a funny sort of syncopated thing at low idle but at "normal" idle they sound a little better. They do have very noticeable "cackle" and its probably from the electronic injection. Kinda like the more pronounced sound of a 24V when they fire. When I get my new phone I'll have to get some recordings. The ES44DC is a very fine riding engine and loads much better (faster) than any other GE I've handled. The fit and finish rivals anything EMD has put out in a good while. Good engine. Let's keep this thread goin'! All these clips will sound sweet on surround sound! Oh, and we definitely need a top fueler clip!!!!!
