On Board Air

I would like to have an on board air system for filling truck and trailer tires, inflating air bags, air horns, air tools, etc. In researching this, I came across off roaders taking an old York A/C compressor (junk yard variety) and modifying it for use with air. Has anyone done this with a 5. 9 Cummins engine? If so, can you post pictures. I am especially interested in the mounting brackets and how you are driving it. I bet anyone that hauls a trailer would welcome this.

We have on one of our trucks a 12V powered compressor... it uses a DC motor and a compressor off a class 8 truck to pump up and supply a 10 gal tank... the unit wires to the batteries, and is about 12" x 8" x 24"... it has a dash switch to power it on and off and will supply enough air to run a nice 1/2" impact wrench... and fill a truck tire... I think we have close to $1000 in this set up and have sold several of these to fleet service trucks, mostly with bottling companies... . for their service fleet... its much more cost effective than an under hood unit or gas powered unit.

The pacbrake compressor used on the exhaust brakes will do everything you ask except tires and air tools, it handles the kids bike tires, air horns, air bags, very well... just doesn't have the strength to run the heavier stuff...

Personally I can't see where you can chase an old AC compressor and build what your looking for, for under $1000 if you consider your time worth anything at all...

Kirby Enterprises makes a kit to install a York compressor and tank on a Dodge Cummins... it is pricey though, around $1400. Do a search fo 'onboard air compressors' and you will find a bunch of do it yourself York installs that look like they should cost less than $300.

If you DON'T have an exhaust brake already then get a Pacbrake PRXB exhaust brake for your truck and you will kill two birds with one stone! They give you all the stuff to install a compressor and tank for the exhaust brake. It also comes plumbed with a Quick disconnect for hooking up air for other uses. They give you a bag with air hose, tire filler, blow gun and a coil host that will stretch to the rear tires.
