Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Looking for oil by-pass system

Just thought I'd ask some of you that have been down this road before...

I have an EDGE EZ that I purchased last May. It worked fine through the summer months but then started to act up.

It now makes a surging sound at highway speeds, doesn't seem to change the engine speed more like the timing is advancing and then returning to normal. It also accelerates erratic at times.

I contacted EDGE and returned the unit prior to Christmas, they said they would replace it, all I had to do is pay for shipping back to them.

I received the replacement approx 1 week later, it was a surprise to me that it was the same version (3. 0) and had the same date of manufacture... 5/9/2005.

After installing it, I had the exact same issues... .

For the price I paid for this (new), I don't want to continue sending to EDGE, getting back, etc.

I'm wondering if anything on the engine could be contributing to this... . the EZ connects through the MAP sensor, I have 68K on the truck now... maybe I need to clean the MAP sensor. Maybe the IAT sensor.

I know EDGE has had some challenges lately, I just want to be sure it's not something else before I contact them again.

Any thoughts... ? Has anyone had an issue like this and resolved it?

Thanks, Dan

Dan have you tried someone elses EZ or Comp for comparison. If not shoot me a PM and we can get together so you can try my Comp as a EZ. Hopefully they will just plug right in to one another.

Well if it is the same thing that mine was doing which was in a steady 1 second cycle surge. No tach change, no speed increase, just the sound. Power was fine etc. My vp went toast within a couple months after that started. If I recall I removed the ez and it still did it. Within a couple months my vp started getting the 216 code and really started acting up with the dead pedal etc and finally took a dump. I also called edge and they replaced mine as well. They did say that it was not the ez but would replace anyway if I wanted, well I wanted so they did. However I didnt send it back until after my vp was replaced. When I got it back it did not do that anymore however as I stated my vp had been replaced. Try unhooking it and see what happens. Mine only did it when it was cold outside and even then seemed random when it did it.

i have seen this tons of times it is the advance cycling back and forth inside the vp44. The only way to correct it is to replace the vp44. The edge products seem to aggrivate this condition on a worn out injection pump.

Rob,

Thanks, PM sent.

Barry,

I'm not ready to go there yet mentally... I'm on my second lift pump, caught the first one quickly and the pressure never got below 5PSI. I have an awesome pump and do not want to loose it.

Let's hold that thought for now.

BBliss,

You sound like Barry... now I'm starting to get nervous. It sounds exactly like the advance is cycling.

RJPotts,

Agreed on the warranty, hope it doesn't come to that.

Secure on the EDGE, but still looking...

Okay, I need to resurface this thread...

As it turns out this is not the EZ at all. I am on my 3rd unit and in between #2 and #3 running totally stock, this same on again/off again rattling occured. More mellow than with the EZ, but you can still hear it.

To me, it sounds as if the timing advances then retards... all at around 2000RPM while going down the Hwy.

Anyway... I did the key thing today and for the first time I have some codes set. The first one that came up was P1694, then P1693. I looked on the codes chart, but I'm not sure what it means. Here is what is posted:

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM.

P1694 Fault In Companion Module No CCD/J1850 messages received from the powertrain

control module-Aisin transmission

P1694 (M) No CCD Messages received from

ECM

Bus communication failure to PCM.

What do you guys make of that?

I just got an edge comp for a 02. I didn't tap the pump wire yet so it's just like an ez. It's been causing my truck to shudder between about 1700 to 2000

rpms. Called edge and they said that it had to do with the air temp. It's been around 30 degrees here. He also said the 01 and 02 models did this stock

but it wasn't bas enough to notice until you started putting a box on them!

I started paying attention and it doesn't do it as bad if I can get the engine temp up to about 190 degrees. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this?

D. miner, something else for you to consider. Your APPS (throttle position sensor) will wear where your pedal spends the most time and you'll end up with a dead or noisy spot in your throttle travel.

Next time the truck is surging, turn on the cruse and take your foot off the pedal. On your 2002 ETH cruise control is integrated into the ECM and does not use the APPS. If the surging stops, then that points to a noisy APPS. If it was the VP44 the surging would continue.

Or, with the truck in neutral, slowly depress the throttle to the floor (it'll stop at redline) and watch for hesitation around your cruse rpms. Again, if throttle response is smooth above and below that rpm range, it is probably a noisy APPS.

When mine started going bad, I found that if I repeatedly depressed and released the throttle (engine off, key off) 20 or so times, then I would have smooth throttle response for the next few drives. Kinda like the potentiometer for the volume knob on a radio; if it crackles when you adjust the volume, you can spin it back and forth to "clean" some of the corrosion or dust out of the contacts. Of course this isn't a fix, but it helps until you can get a new APPS (about $360).

As far as the codes, they seem pretty generic. I'd bet they're from plugging/unplugging the EZ.

I have the same year, same engine same rearend I have never noticed anything but smoothness in that power range For our trucks thats 45 to 60 mph, that we are runnin alot. But I have never used an edge product. Seems to me if there was the slightest hesitation we would feel it.

YEAH I WAS KINDA THINKING THE GUY AT EDGE WAS BLOWING SMOKE UP MY

@$$ i THINK THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THERE BOX AND THE AIR TEMP BUT THEY ARN'T TELLING IF THERE IS! BUT FOR THE MONEY THEY COST I AM NOT REAL IMPRESSED IF IT CAUSES MY TRUCK TO SHUDDER WHEN IT IS COLD

My stock 02 has the same engine surge problem when it is cold. I just finished installing an Edge Comp box (like an hour ago) and the first thing I noticed was the surging was exaggerated. Once it warmed up, however it smotthed right out.

No your not alone my friend. I live in the mountains on NC and It kinda stinks that I will have this problem for another 2 months!!#@$%!

Hmmmmmmmmm. I find this concerning. I have been running the Edge EZ for maybe 30k and love it. Next to the ATS transmission it is the best upgrade I have done. I like the extra power and the 2 mpg increase. Can I expect to be seeing these kinds of problems too in the future?

Mine didn't show up until I put bigger injectors on it. So if you leave everything alone, probably won't see it show up.

Keep in mind that injectors/boxes amplify throttle response. If you have a flakey APPS or a worn VP that causes slight surges, the mods will just make the surging stronger.

My truck had an annoying surge of power as I accelerated (hard to drive smoothly), as well as the surging at cruise (but not on cruise control). With the box off it was barley noticable, and with the box on it was very obvious. Now with my new APPS it feels like a whole new truck. Even with everything on the throttle response is linear.

It's amazing on our trucks how similar symptoms can have so many differrent causes. This issue is not fuel surging, that would rule out the APPS. It's not a throttle increase/decrease... it's more of a timing (rattle sound) change while the throttle is being held in the same position.

It's really hard to describe... imaging going down the highway holding a steady 60 / 70 and having the diesel, rattle sound increase and decrease as "it" decides.

I'm equating the rattle to advanced or increased timing. Those that have added after market boxes (like the Edge EZ) know what I'm talking about. The sound changes once it's added from how it sounded stock. The "flaring" of the rattle sound sometimes occurs during acceleration through the gears, ALWAYS under light throttle application.

Some of the first responses to this thread are sounding the closest to what's happening. Posts by BarryG, BBliss and RJPotts have me concerned this is happening in the VP44. If that is the case, I have no choice but to allow it to get worse, throw some codes and take it to the dealer. The downside is I like my VP44, it has always worked well and keeps fueling and gaining speed and power above 3200 RPM.

A friend is going to help me reflash the ECM with stock software (and no EZ) hoping that might work. It fixed it for a time once before. Here's the thread over on Northwest Bombers website:

I appreciate all the responses... that's what makes this such a great site. If you have had this happen to you, I would like to hear about it.

I will keep you posted on how this all shakes out.

Thanks, Dan
