Archived On the side of the Road! Help!

I was going down the highway, doing 60mph and the truck just shut off. The truck will run for 60secs then shut back off again. I'm guessing the fuel pump. If it was the fuel pump would it run? I have a 04. 5 3500 crew cab dully 6-speed manual 135,000 miles.

change your fuel filter.

you could have bad fuel, or it could have gelled.

cheap and quick.

Do you have the in-tank or filter canister pump? The in-tanks don't seem to have many issues so it could be fuel filter. If it is the canister mounted pump, they can be intermittent. The pump could run for awhile until it got too hot and then stop after 60 sec. Mine is a canister mounted pump and failed on the freeway. After a few minutes I was able to get it started and home before it failed again. It threw a code for the pump in my case.

Got it back to the shop. Had to have my daughter come get me with the old 93. I was pulling a 7500lbs gooseneck, we put the dully on the trailer and towed it back to the shop. That was the biggest load the old dog ever pulled. Anyways it was the fuel pump it has the one mounted on the side of the filter. It would run about 100 feet at a time so I able to get it off the highway. Thanks for the reply, that was my daughters post trying to help dad.

Odd how that is the most common time that they fail.



They hardly ever crap out in a parking lot, or the next morning in the driveway.

Yep, that's why my lift pump on the fuel filter went into the trash can a couple of years ago before it quit running. I don't like "dead on the side of the road".

Then it must be a 04. I think they put the pump in the tank that is why they called it 04. 5. I carry an extra pump under the back seat of my 03.

I believe that in Jan. 2004 (04. 5) they put EGR on the engine and increased the HO to 325 HP. In 2005 they put the fuel pump into the tank and all engines were 325 hp.

04. 5 still had the canister mounted pump as mine failed at 70k . 05 fuel pump went into the tank
