Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) ? on transmission band adjustment

I just did a transmission fluid and filter change yesterday, and adjusted the bands. My questions is... .



Do the bands have anything to do with how firm the transmission shifts ?



Because, now the transmission seems to not shift as firm ( could possibly be my imagination ), and I'm wondering if I have screwed up the band adjustments. On the front band, I tightened to 72 in/lbs and then backed off 1 7/8's turns. On the rear band I tightened to 72 in/lbs and backed off 3 turns. I know the figures are correct but just wondering if I screwed up.



I added 4. 5 quarts back to the transmission after pan drop and filter change.

Did you disconnect the return spring that is attached to the Throttle valve lever on the transmission while adjusting the front band? (This is assuming the 24v have to still use one. ) If you did, and forgot to hook it back up, that is your problem. Without it,

causes low pressure and mushy shifts.

I left the spring on as I did the adjustment, just bent it down with the Torx attachment.



The shifts aren't exactly mushy, just a little less firm. It's something that I barely even notice. That's why I was wondering if the bands being a little loose could affect shift firmness.



Is there any other way to tell if they are too loose ?

Keep an eye on your fluid level for a few days.

The transmission will usually "burp" an air bubble leaving you a quart or more low.
