One Big Old Clutch...

Thanks, TDR Staff

My EGT Frustration has finally ended.

what tweaks can be done to improve spool

You know you're on that slippery slope to being a bombaholic when your clutch seems to be made of... . ice, slipping whenever you step on the big pedal too quickly. Had a late model Firebird literally slip away from me tonight while I helplessly watched my tach head for the ceiling. :{

But I think I found my fix thanks to Tom at Carolina Clutch. Great guy to deal with. Really knows his stuff. (No, he didn't pay me to say this and we ain't related. )

Luk finally came out with a 13" Ceramic for 2nd Gen 5-speeds that should hold a lot more than I'm ever gonna throw at it. It costs a few bucks, but it sure looks impressive sitting om my living room floor right now.

I'm sure that the UPS guy hates me. This thing is HUGE!!! Darn kit came in 2 boxes and weighs over 100 lbs, comes with a new flywheel and starter spacer. :rolleyes:

Should get it bolted up in a couple weeks. Film @ 11:00.

Now where'd those bigger injectors go??

Mmmmmmmm... ... . Bigger Turbo.

Oo. Oo. Oo.

Please let us know how you like as I am in the process of looking for a new clutch and was waiting for the LUK to come out.

I just got my new Southbend from UPS today and noticed that the pressure plate and disk both have LUK stamped on them. I hope the extra $400 I spent over a Pro Gold is worth it. Jake

sounds like you mighta bought a $400 box!! :(

That $400 was probably worth it. SB takes a known good product and bombs it. They've been doing it for years.

Now Luk just made theirs a little stronger to start with. The part # is 05-118.

Just got the pro gold for my 2000 and now it shudders at takeoff in first second and reverse. Drives fine otherwise any ideas??? Turned the flywheel and mechanic throughly cleaned everything before install... any help would be appreciated.

Ok, so it's already a month later, the weather is almost warm enough to work in the garage, but my kid's omni glh has taken residence there for a trannyectomy, so I still haven't got it installed. :(

But I did get the wallpaper hung in the wife's bathroom that was supposed to be done before (last) Thanksgiving. :rolleyes:

And I have had to spend a lot of time talking to the insurance guy and the body shop, again. Yup, another dang deer. Buckstop bumper wouldn't have helped either. Stopped quick enough for the first one to run by, then his friend ran right into my rear door and bounced off the box. :{

Maybe it'll be my turn soon. :p

This MIGHT be the point where LUK simply shrugs their shoulders and sez "sorry" - and where SBC would step up and make it right - THAT'S where the extra $400 makes the difference... ;)

re

You need more power,then it will slip when you take off. Just kidding it will get better,the ceramic is just really grabby. Get a couple hundred miles on it I bet it gets better.

Technical Buttetin LB187

RKohn,

Hope your aware of this TB from Luk on the 05-118. If not here it is.

LB187 - Abrupt Engagement on Heavy-duty Discs

This LuK RepSet contains a heavy-duty disc with cerametallic friction material. This material normally results in abrupt engagement of the clutch and some clutch chatter. Advise the vehicle owner of this before you sell or install a LuK RepSet containing cerametallic friction material.

wow, now I know what that $400 buys!!! beyond any proprietary modifications that SBC performs on the disks and plates, that $400 buys the greatest customer service on earth.

the springs in my 12" OFE broke. Peter said they had a different spring design, and if I promised to be a good boy and not abuse it, he would send me out a new disk and pressure plate!! :eek:

the damage to this disk was done by the previous owner, and he's warrantying it FOR ME!??!?!? my jaw hit the floor... I'm just blown away.

Peter's got a customer for life right here.

The LUK lasted about 60k. been babying it for a couple months.

Trying the new Valair 12. 25" with the #3800 plate this time.
