Did this last Wednesday. The original steer axle only had one kingpin retaining bolt per side. The new & improved axle has two. This truck pulls a 53 foot Peerless 'possum belly' chip trailer and grosses out at 105,500. After ~800,000 miles, things can get pretty loose up front.

Had to save the spindles, they were almost new. The driver side was frozen... . had to heat the old axle up red hot to break it free; the truck looked pretty cool on fire for a bit there. :D

Anyways, thought some of you might enjoy these pictures. That's the service oiler on the left with the other camera phone--he thought it was pretty wild. :-laf

One truck down... ... 8 more to go!!!

t -800 looks nice. . what the wheelbase on it?... . 260? 12. 7l detroit or 14L? i bet it pulls decent and gets decent mileage. . hey now . . is that only two jacks stands under that truck?. . man if so your brave guy. . we normally crib it a little.

More pics and details please.

thanks

man that last one is really really nuts ha... i mean on a big truck doing brakes etc we nomally use two 20ton bottle jacks under the axle. . but just two jack stands is scary for me. . the loader is a tough call they look like cheesy stands too. . when I worked at the mine any thing big was oak cribed and bottle jacked...

i saved that pic though. . :)

It's a 2001 T-800

270" WB

14L Series 60 550hp.

18 speed

It gets around 4-5mpg loaded.

The jack stands are larger than they appear and are rated at 15 tons..... the tractor isn't going anywhere. We crib the heavy stuff, too... . there's a 100 ton P&H crawler crane behind that wall in about 7,600 pieces.

**EDIT** 15 tons for the pair, not each... . my bad, but still plenty for that truck.

cool . . the stands look tiny in the picture.

a Pre EGR 14L. . the 550s and 575 were very nice. . Nice truck in fact if they ever sell it or want to trade in on new one. . post it up here . . I'm interested.

thanks

Wow, I love looking at that kind of stuff. Any chance you can get a couple higher resolution shots that are less blurry?

How did you lift the truck to get it on the stands?

What color do you want? We have red, turquoise/white (old school KW paint scheme), pink, purple w/ pink scallops (seriously), yellow, orange, and yellow w/ purple fenders..... some of them aren't as bad as they sound, and the others are every bit as hideous as they sound. :-laf

One is rated at 575, the rest are 550. Per the Detroit dealer the 575 is/was DaimlerChrylser only (Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star) but Kenworth got them for a very short time, sort of by accident. The 550's aren't uprate-able either. :( They'll probably keep them until they've been ran into the ground. I won't call them the perfect truck for what we do with them, but they're pretty darn close.

Ryan, I shot them with my camera phone---don't have a digital camera as of yet, and my phone is a fairly crappy one. I hope to have a decent camera around Xmas time and will try to get some better pics of stuff as time goes on.

To pick the truck up I used a 25 ton Gray air-over-hydraulic service jack... . like this one:

The handle pivots down flat to the floor so you can roll them under just about anything. Really a pretty cool tool to have around. We have six. Oo.

Looks like fun!

Man; every Kingpin I've ever done has been :( #@$%!

Gotta Love It.

Tuesday I did the pins in our C-500 lowboy tractor..... can't remember the Kaiser pin kit number off the top of my head, but it's the largest on-highway steer axle available from Kenworth on any truck..... the driver side pin wore completely through the bushing and cut a groove in the spindle.

It's a dual steering box truck---the spindles are $1,100 and change each. :D

Nothing like dealing with the residual fall-out of an incompetent grease guy... .

Hmmmmmmmmm, sounds like fun.

We replaced the kingpins on a early 90's some model FLD, prob a million plus miles. Drivers side we worked on for two days :{ We beat, we frailed, we jacked, we heated, we cussed; finally we cut. The spindle that is  It was a mess, then we started on the pass side... ... ... ... ... ..... it fell out :--) Not cool. Spindle was about 600 bucks for that one.
