Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) One piece dipstick

Changed the oil on the 02 and was surprised to find a one piece dipstick. Put 10 Qts in the motor and one in the filter and it lined up fairly well. More than I can say for my 01 with it's riveted dipstick.



Can't believe it took them that long to engineer one. Those extra engineering costs must be why they left all the other stuff off of the 02's. I might have to find out what outrageous price the stealer wants for a solid one.

I would assume so.....

I'll have to yank em both out at once and take a look. They are mounted identical so I would have to guess that they would be interchangeable.

I totally agree with you guys. I was shocked when I changed the oil in my wife's 01 and find out that she had one of them famous riveted dipsticks. What's the deal??



Usually I have to fill her truck with almost 12 quarts of oil for it to register in the safe zone on her truck, where as my 2k with the 1 piece dipsick and the amsoil bypass, I only need 10 quarts. Hmmmm what in the world was DC thinking????

I always wanted to get sone 3/8 tubing and do a long long tube from the motor to the rear bumper and then make a long long dipstick to match.



Then when at the gas station and you have an audiance start pulling it out , imagine a 12 footer whipe it off , shove it back in and than pull it out again , look at the end real close and shove it in again. I changed the oil in the 01 today and got reminded what a pain the riveted stick was. So I called the stealer ($20. 85 for the 02) who didn't have a clue who had me call DC who didn't have a clue, who then referred me to Cummins who didn't have a clue. So when the old lady got home I yanked her stick and tried it in mine.



It wont even go in all the way. Seems to hang up where it enters the block.



The 01 stick is barely an 1/8" longer yet the fill marks are a 1/4" off from the 02. And with 1 in the filter and 10 in the truck that's where my stick reads when full. The 02 stick is also completely straight and flat, no twists at all. I think thats why it wont go in. The 01 has several twists at the end and one before the rivets. I think this curving keeps it from hanging up by the block. So even the universal stick would need to be twisted a certain way to work. Looks like we're SOL.



I did notice the tube had an "M" stamped on the 02. It must be different also. I wonder if you changed that also, seeings the block hasn't changed any, that a straight stick would then work. Of course the cost is now getting to where I would put up with the riveted stick anyway.

My plastic handle broke off the dip stick when my foot stool slipped and my hand landed on it. Dodge wanted $50. 00 for a new one. I cut the plastic end off and drilled an 8-32 clearance hole length wise through the plastic handle. Then I took a 3" long 8-32 screw and sliped the dip stick into the screw slot and welded it there. Put on a washer and installed the handle. Secured it with a washer, nut, and loctite. Stronger than new.

I guess this is now a one piece stick.

I am a little confused as to why everyone hates the two piece dipstick. I personally haven't had any problems with mine. Should I be expecting some probs.

ccsial is great. The dip stick is the first problem I've had in over three years (40,000 mi) since the air went out because two freon lines were routed too close. What a great truck this has been.
