I have a one wire alternator on my '45 Jeep. I think the alternator died, but can't tell for sure.

I tried starting the jeep this afternoon and no go so I jumped it. It started fine and was showing charge on the voltmeter so I unhooked the cables and the jeep died. I then measured the volatge across the battery with the jeep off and it was 12 volts. I think the charge that the jeep voltmeter was showing was from my truck. Anyhow...

Off the positive post I have a shutdown solenoid inline with the starter solenoid. The shutdown solenoid is so that I can park the jeep without having to undo the battery cables to prevent a slow battery drain. Thinking that the shutdown solenoid was the culprit, I bypassed it. I then fired the jeep up and revved it up to activate the one wire charging and the voltmeter still read 12 volts and slowly dropping.

Does this mean that my one wire alternator is FUBARed? How can I check it? Are all one wire alternators the same size dimensionally so that I can buy one and install it without having to realign brackets?

This kind of ticks me off because it was 20-degrees and a perfect day for a jeep ride in the hills!

Pictures of my jeep engine compartment etc. can be seen on the 3rd post on Page 5 of this thread:
