I finally got around to installing a FP gauge yesterday. It's an autometer z-series mechanical gauge.

Fuel is flowing fine through the hose, I disconnected the gauge and cycled the lift pump... a lot of diesel flowed from the gauge end.

Start the truck: jumps to 12 psi, then drops to ~2 psi... then if any throttle is applied, 0 psi.

I've been told this is a classic lift pump failure case.

When I bought this truck, 3k miles ago, I SPECIFICALLY asked about the LP before I bought the truck... and the salesman swore up and down that everything was in tip top shape.

First off, on average, how long does it take a lift pump to degrade to this point? Was it maybe already going bad when I bought it?

I'm still in warranty, but I'm gonna chew some ass if it was already going out when I bought it after the salesman re-assured me it was FINE.

Second, how is my VP44 doing after all this? God knows how long this truck has been running on 0 psi??? Should I press for a new injection pump?

I guess I'm an official member of the 24v club...

:-laf

It may have just started going bad or it may have been that way a long time. there is no way to tell. They will probly change the lp. But the vp they won't change till is bad for sure. That doesn't matter how much you scream.

The answer to the FIRST entry is: When did you ever start thinking that a salesman knew anything about the shape of the truck he/she is selling, and even if they did... do you really think they would tell you about it????

The anwer to the SECOND entry is: There is no pattern, time frame, driving conditions, weather, phase of the moon, ect... . ect... that will tell you when a LP will fail. If you own a 24V and don't have a FP gauge... you deserve what you get when it fails. Now we are seeing posts that say the 3rd gens are starting to have LP failures.

Ok, thanks guys.

And yeah, I was very sceptical of what the salesman was telling me... I'm just hoping this thing slid quick, and it hasn't been running low pressure for long...

What's the part number on the new liftpump?

Does anyone make an updated oem style pump? I plan on relocating the stock pump for now, and then upgrading to an aftermarket system as soon as I can.

TOO many LP failures, Lawyer time???

"I'm still in warranty, but I'm gonna chew some ass if it was already going out when I bought it after the salesman re-assured me it was FINE. " This is how CB Parker put it but now I think it is time DC/Cummins is taken to the court house. This is not what I bought a truck for. Let's hear how all of you guys around the country feel!!!

My thoughts EXACTLY! If my injection pump was damaged by this, I'm going to go rounds with whoever is resonsible for this crappy electronic LP setup. Especially since it was probably only damaged (if at all) enough to crap out on me 1k miles out of warranty...

There is a reason the vp44/electronic LP setup is not found on any other cummins application!

I know a lot of people poo-poo the p7100 conversion, but I may just look into it. I know it's spendy, but it may save a lot of headaches.

This is the way I look at it: a truck like this will NEVER be made again, so I plan on hanging onto it for a very long time... VERY long time. All the new trucks are so hung up on EPA rules that they're getting rediculouse... whatever I can do to make it last longer will help. Getting rid of electronics makes the truck last exponentially longer.

You think you feel like "chewing some"... ... . read my post about dealer policy on lift pump replacement! You think you're mad now... wait till they give you this Bullcrap #@$%!

Wow! You've got a BAD dealer!

I went and scheduled and apointement at my local dealership, salesman said that if the warranty won't pick it up, then the dealership will pay the tab!

It's really nice to be "in" with the guys who work at your local dealership!

I am saving for gauges right now how do you like your auto meter gauges? Im planing on running them still debating wether to have them installed or do them my self . All these lift pump threads are making me sweat  Most poeple i know think im being paireniod for wanting to put more gauges in my truck they say your truck only has 40,000 miles on it why are you worryed about the lift pump and trany . Anyway i hope that someday this problem will be just a memory

If it makes you feel better, I went through 8 (Not a Typo) :{ LPs before I finally bought a FASS. BTW I put my FASS on when my truck had around 70,000 miles. 30,000 miles later, I have had no problems with it.

I plan on biting the bullet and going with the RASP. Looks like it'll be a cool grand total before you're done with the install, but it's one beefy unit.

I like my autometers! I had them in my old truck, and I'd put them in any new trucks in the future!

Air Dog is on the work bench in a box. When I finish installing 275's tonight, I'll start on bypassing the LP and installing the Air Dog system. No more crappy parts installed by me or the Stealers. From now on, " If it's CRAP, it's SCRAP ".

What's that?

Ok guys, I got my truck back from the dealership... got the LP replaced for free. The tech said my pump passed the flow test, but he knew I was "in the know" and replaced it anyways!

I think I may be having gauge problems now, however... air in the line I think... because it's now reading 13psi at idle, 9 at cruise, and drops to zero at WOT. I've been told it shouldn't get below 8.

CB,

You may have another bad pump. If I remember it right, rkressg (in line to his 8 bad lift pumps) had a bad one out of the box from Cummins. It does happen. I would definately go back to the dealer. I have had air in my line to the gauge when I installed it (mine is totally mechanical into the cab) and never read zero because of air. The air is drawn out pretty fast on my system.

I got one, it was bad out of the box. The Cummins dealer that I bought it from would not warranty it. They said they would have to diagnose it, which (if determined not to be bad) would have cost me a minimum of four hours labor (almost $100 hour).

I never had one that produced more than 13 psi at idle. They all sucked when I stepped on the accelerator. I do not know if it had to do with having a long bed and extended cab. That will add two extra feet that the LP has to move the fuel. I ended up spending more money on replacement LPs than I spend on the alternative pump. That stupid LP also cost me a VP44.

BTW, the truck was not stock, so all the LPs were on my wallet.
