Re: Pipes do raise your ability to notice bikes
What would have happened if it had been a soccer mom in her Expedition (w/o a coffee can muffler)? Yes, sound does get your attention, why else do emergency vehicles use lights and SIRENS? But, the loud pipes save lives arguement doesn't hold water IMO. If loud pipes save lives then every Hyundai on the road should be running open pipes.....
Sitting in your blind spot was the HD rider's mistake. Maybe I should just hold my horn button down next time I'm stuck in somebody's blind spot. Ignorance/rider incompetance is not an excuse for loud pipes.
Very sorry to hear about your friend.

I waited and just then he popped up over the hill. He was only about 80 ft from me and I was unable to see him. If I had pulled out he would have had to take evasive action. .

A piped harley has sat in my blind spot on more than one occasion. I remember one instance when I was about to switch lanes and I realised because of the sound of the bike that someone was there. I was daydreaming and would have creamed him.

I dont ride bikes any more. I lost my best friend on my bike a year ago. He made a fatal error. By my estimation he target fixated.
Very sorry to hear about your friend.
