What would have happened if it had been a soccer mom in her Expedition (w/o a coffee can muffler)? Yes, sound does get your attention, why else do emergency vehicles use lights and SIRENS? But, the loud pipes save lives arguement doesn't hold water IMO. If loud pipes save lives then every Hyundai on the road should be running open pipes.....

Sitting in your blind spot was the HD rider's mistake. Maybe I should just hold my horn button down next time I'm stuck in somebody's blind spot. Ignorance/rider incompetance is not an excuse for loud pipes.

I'm not going to come down on one side or the other on straight piping anything (my truck is straight piped btw). When it comes to bikes though the only smart thing is to take the responsibility on yourself when it comes to avoiding accidents. It doesn't matter why someone cuts you off or does something stupid in front of you - your still the one who's going to go down and get hurt. I have over 100,000 miles riding bikes on the street and I've never had someone do something unexpected in a car around me. For one simple reason - I EXPECT everyone to do exactly the wrong thing at the wrong moment and always have an out. I've been "cut off" a million times and had cars pull out in front of me, etc. But because I was expecting it and already had my out planned it was no big deal. I never sit next to a car in traffic - I slow down and wait behind their bumper until there's enough room for me to accelerate quickly past them into the next hole. When on a two lane road if there is someone coming in the other lane and someones about to pull out onto the road such that I can't take the other lane if necessary I slow down assuming they will pull out.



I've always maintained my bikes meticulously; never done anything to a bike that would reduce it's handling, braking, or acceleration ability at all; always kept my riding skills top notch; never ridden while tired or sick, etc. That way I am always on my toe's and ready to avoid the accident I don't want to be in. JMHO



On the law up north, do you guys have something like SEMA up in your area that you could contact about this. SEMA may even work up in Canada.
