I received this in an e-mail today from Tom Partridge at Cummins.

With respect to your post on the CAN website I feel I should advise you against making any changes in the manor you have described.

The Cummins ECM is smart enough to monitor data that is

on the CANbus and it remembers fuelling parameters for a period on time.

Should you have a engine/fuel system failure the Cummins dianostics tool can be used to see if any fuelling parameters to the VP44 have been within specification

- your warranty would be invalid.

Assuming you do not have the top power rating for the engine, I would ask a Dodge dealer how much it would cost to re-calibrate your engine for a higher horsepower.

This will depend on what vintage of engine you have.

Hope that helps you.

Tom.

What kindof crack is the cummins guy smoking? Yeah, right. DC is going to reprogram our computers for the most horse power? I think not. I quit going to the dealership because I had less and less power after they reflashed the computer for the EPA crap.

How is the research going dieselfreak?

there was no signiture in the e-mail

I posted on a CAN mailing list that I am currently subscribed to.

lots of information flying around in Cyberspace.

Did he give you permission to post his email address? Didn't you post recently about your information being distributed w/o permission?

well he's about half right. the Cummins ECM and FPCM can store that information. BUT the DRB tool that a dodge dealer uses has no access to that information. nor do the techs no how to get to it.

if you took the truck in to a good dealer, had the pump swapped out and made sure the pump wire had no tracable defects (Bluechip Diesel) then when it made its way back to Cummins they would not suspect it and not question the return.

now, if you have a real nasty dealer that calls the star line and starts questioning the truck and its integrity then they could be informed to look further...

Now you are starting to figure out(we hope) why you dont keep shooting your mouth off about this can/bus ecm reprogramming on this web-site. It's their ball and bat and they choose who sits on the bench.

And yes from Dodge you can buy an uprated ecm for your particular model yr. vehicle(not the best bang for the buck) but it's available. the gentleman wasn't incorrect on that statement.

Also another option, After your warranty EXPIRES is to have your ecm reflashed by the dealer(Cummins) with the 275rv program or the 300isb program, you will have to sign a waiver so i was told. (didnt choose to go that route).

Either way (without being rude) don't use this website as a sounding board(EVERYONE IS WATCHING). learn from others. (mistakes)

Dazed and confused ...

Soon I will be hitting the 100K mark and will become my own warranty station, like it or not. I will be uprating at that point.

My question is this ... (can of worms opening here) ...

I have read about various controllers, boot modules, fuel injectors and now the 275 or 300 HP reflash. My guess is that there are no clear leaders in the field and that people's experience with a product (good or bad) determine their opintion of the product.

It seems odd to me that I can get a 15% HP gain just by changing out the microcode that controls the engine, but it looks possible. I'll be checking the past threads for more, but I'd appreciate you comments on what is the most cost effective upgrade on a 98. 5 24 valve with 5 speed is. Both in terms of initial cost and long term reliability. I am looking to somewhere between 275 and 300 HP - nothing wild here. Post your response or email me at -- email address removed --.

Thanks, Steve Biel

the 275 and 300 programs are great but....

From what I hear they have a rev limit of around 2600 RPM. I learned a little from a gentleman that I might be able to learn more from if I stop by his shop on the way to Munice. The next thing is finding a shop that will do this is all but impossible.

If I were looking for what you want, I would look in to getting an Edge EZ, and some DD2 injectors. But before you get anything, get some gauges.

Can the cummins dealership really reflash our trucks with the 300hp version of code? It was my understanding that the ECM in the dodge trucks is not the same as the cummins ecm they ship out on other engines, that ours is a watered down DC version? Also, what would be gained by the reflash? I already have DDIII's and TTPM, would I get anything additional out of it. I am not worried about warranty, been out of it for about 50k or so ago. As you can tell by my earlier post, I am not a DC fan. My last visit to the dealership, I came away with a huge dent in my passenger side door and the emergency brake handle broken, along with the problems I brought it in for unfixed.

On a side note, as far as I know, Cummins does not own the CAN bus architecture or standards, they have just implemented it on their application. I have spend many late nights reverse engineering closed communications protocals for work so that we could have an even playing field in that industry. These were companies that we were our partners/competitors. They had products that competed with our own, but they also sold our solution with their products because our solution was better and the customers knew it.

Morph, I am not Neo but.....

The Dodge ECM is a stripped down version of a Cummins ECM. The true questions I guess is: "Can the Dodge ECM hold a Cummins reflash of the ISB300 fueling maps?" Next it would be: "Can this be achived with overcoming the 2600 RPM limit on the program?"

There is a different plug for the Dodge then a regular Cummins ECM, DF can provide more info on this. There was a post showing the difference not too long back, if I can find it I will post it.

Can the cummins dealership really reflash our trucks with the 300hp version of code?

Where is a master like Topfuel, or Evan Beck when we need them?

Andrew:(

Hey Andrew

I was with Evan Beck last week at his shop... ... ... . WOW what a shop and yep things were happening there. I was impressed with the set up and he's got his hands full. I was on a bizz trip and when I go back up there I'm bringing MONEY! The action was very cool:cool:

William

William,

Did Evan Beck reprogram an ECM, yes or no? Did he say he could? What did he say about this topic? PM if I think would be best. I am very courious about this, and have been for some time.

Andrew

sbiel,

I sent you an e-mail. I am selling my EZ from my '99 for cheap on the TDR classifieds if you are interested... . A great low-priced HP upgrade. An EZ box along with injectors should put you right in the HP range you are looking for. :D

300hp program does exist!!

I posted this about 18 months ago, but here it is again. The service man from Cummins SP in Amarillo was here working on one of my rowcrop sprayers(200hp 12 valve). He was driving a then fairly new 3500 service truck. I asked him what he done to it, because being a Cummins tech he surely knows a few tricks and such. He said Cummins has the program for 300hp/650tq. Just download it into the ECM, that's it. He also told me that his boss would be a little hesitant to admit it existed to me(he wouldn't) It is there, we just have to know someone to get it, because this program doesn't meet EPA regs or something like that. :)

ok, I'll find this stuff again....

Turboman,

I saw that post but, I will search the net tonight for some stuff that leads me to belive he was telling a fib.
