Warning: driving over a median to save a couple minutes might cost you an hour. :-laf

So on the way to a christmas party I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. In an effort to bypass the congested road ahead, I decided to make a left and take back streets. The left hand turn lane was empty and the light was turning green... but the cars in my lane were backed up past the entrance to the left hand turn lane which was blocked by one of those curbed planter boxes. Seeing that the couple of barely surviving plants in the box already had tire tracks on them and the curb was chipped away from people driving over it, I figured what the heck and went for it. Almost immediately the truck sank and forward momentum was lost. Well, I guess the last few days of rain decided to all drain into that planter box and create the nastiest gooey mud I've ever seen in the middle of a high traffic urban road. I didn't have it in 4x4 as I didn't expect the ground to give way like that, and as you can see in the pics, the front tire was nearly covered to the top with mud. The right side of the truck was still at ground level on decent traction, but even if I had lockers I wasn't getting out of this mess. I made a call to AAA Plus ($79/yr, best investment on the planet) and the flatbed was on it's way. I inspected my truck and all was mechanically fine, so my only worry was a run-in with the law. The last thing I wanted was a ticket for destruction of public property or the like. About that time, I see flashing lights and a local police unit coming my way. Assuming the worst I was pleasantly surprised that the officer was a fellow Jeeper, and had just had his squad car stuck in the mud around the corner while chasing some perps through the park. He even told me he was nearly stuck in the very same median the night before. Seeing the look on my girlfriend's face when he jokingly asked her "do you think he deserves a citation?" was enough for him to have pity on me. We were about an hour late to the party, but in the end everyone was fine and it didn't cost me anything but embarassment.

Oh, man, that is good stuff! Glad the truck's okay. Did the wrecker have any trouble winching you out?

Great pics...

-Ryan :)

OH MAN!!! I bet that was unexpected... I'll think twice after looking at those pics. I bet your heart just sank when that happend... One thing I can learn from this is put it in 4 wheel drive and go for it :D

Shame that happened, but it will give you something to laugh about in the future. These trucks are too heavy for the soft stuff, as you well now know. Take care.

No, it pulled right out no problem. The only tricky part was that I left my hitch pin key at home. He wanted to do some makeshift hookup to the frame but I wasn't down with that! I had him hook the front part of the receiver from underneath the hitch so it wouldn't be yankin on my frame unevenly. The mud was so soft it didn't give much resistence at all, and his Warn 12K winch didn't sound like it was being stressed much.

Paper plates and everything? Glad to hear it worked out okay. Bet everyone driving by was wondering how you got in that position? What did it look like the next day? Did you go by?

i had something similar happen last winter. there was a ditch on the side of the road that was graded smooth with the road surface. i was pulling off to the side to park and went a little too close to the edge and poof, the truck was now stuck good... i had to call the ol' man to come drag me out with his chevy... :(:( my truck was sitting on about a 40° angle, with the drivers rear tire almost off the ground

First day of bow season I slid half off my earth dam and had my truck teatering. I tried everything but sitting on the skid plates and in same type of soft mud it wasnt coming out. A power company truck 2 ton had to work a little to free me. No damage to my truck but a lot to my pride. Oh well live and learn.

What corner was that? I think I have done just that same thing at that same spot... never would have thought different just cause a bit of rain had visited.

Yeah, to say it caught me by surprise would be an understatement. It's not like I haven't jumped over medians before... there was no way to predict the mud was that soft. In fact, it was plenty hard to stand on right next to the truck, but once the crust was broken through, it was over. BTW, greenhorn, that intersection was Sunrise and Old Auburn. Going southbound. And mberry, not sure what costco has to do with anything (it's several miles from there), but I wouldn't dare brave those lines this time of year. The good news is, after a day of driving it around there no unnoticed symptoms have shown up. I did the fuel tank vent mod today and inspected everything while I was under there. Man it's nice being able to fill it to the brim with only 20 seconds of top-off time instead of 10+ minutes!

Vent mod?

What vent mod?

Also glad all is OK

:)

DGFoster: This vent mod. Thanks to spooled-up for making that one easy!

As for the front air dam... yeah that was actually broken the day before in the snow. I guess I just like beating up my $40K+ toys. Hey, it's a good excuse to get the UTE bumper... ok maybe not, but I can still dream! Actually I'm getting ready to go out right now and take the rest of the broken plastic crap off. It doesn't do anything but reduce my approach angle offroad anyhow. Plus, that loss of 5lb should give me another . 00001 second in the 1/4 mile! ;)

Looks very much like the intersection just off 65 to Costco opposite the Galleria. My bad. I'm glad your truck is ok and glad to the fuel tank mod works good.

How long did it take you to do the vent mod? I am getting ready to do mine. I live between Nevada City and I-80. Been waiting for the weather to warm up and snow to melt. Looks good now and we don't have your fog.

Well, I would allow yourself 2 hours start to finish for the tank mod, although it will likely take a little less. This is assuming you have all the parts ready to go and have some clue when it comes to turning a wrench. A nice deep 15mm socket on an air ratchet will save you some time, as will having an extra set of hands when it comes time to hook things back up (one person hold the tank while the other fumbles wiht the fuel lines).
