OPD's for gas botttles

I know I'm a little late, but need to replace the top of my gas bottles for the RV listed below... Hardly ever use the gas (wife always wants to go out when traveling!!)... Thought some of you may know of web-site or person I could buy this things from???

I could be wrong here but I was told that you can replace the valves but you have to take it in somewhere so that they can install it. And for the price I was quoted for doing it that way it was cheaper in the end to buy a new tank with the new valve especialy since the tanks also have expiration date on them now and mine were only going to be good for a couple more years anyway. Now this was just for the 5 gal/20lb bottles.

I've had six 30 lb. or 40 lb. aluminum LPG cylinders converted by a local LP dealer. It was so inexpensive and quick it wouldn't have been worth trying to buy the valves and change them myself.



Any propane dealer in your yellow pages directory can probably exchange your valves to OPD for you at a very modest price.

OPD Valve Tanks

I went to my local LP Gas Dealer and he suggested I go to Walmart and swap them my old tank for one equipped with an OPD valve. Seems to me it was under $20 and you get a full tank of propane besides. This was for a 20# tank. If you need 30# tanks, I think you will have to go to a LP Dealer and have them change the valves.

I did the same as Frank with my 20# tanks except I just went to the local supermarket. $14 each and I was on my way with two new full tanks.

I have the thirty pound tanks that are due to retest in o6 and think That it easy to do the valve change for twenty dollars at the local LP dealer but think that it is not cost effective as new forty pound tanks from Tractor Supply cost about 60 dollars each and are good for twelve years and give me twenty pounds more capacity . Nothing like running out of LP in the middle of the night . Trailer life has a story about a kit to add to Marshal gas regulators to show when to switch tanks cost about forty dollars looks easy to do ,but I will make my own was in the proses of doing that when I saw the article in trailer life . If you change the valve on the tank have tank tested and stamped by dealer and your good for twelve more years . Lol Ron in Louisville KYOo. Oo.

My experience has been that it's not worth it to change the valves on 20 pound tanks. You can buy a new tank, with the new valve, for about the same price as the valve alone. I hadn't thought of the swap at the local grocery or Walmart. I'll probably do that with the tanks I haven't already converted.



I have some 30 pound tanks that I have already changed over, and two more that need it. I intend to buy the 20 pound tanks at Sam's Club or Walmart and remove the valves for my 30 pound tanks. This is not the ideal way to do it. The valves for the 30 pound tanks are not the same as the valves for 20 pound tanks, but for my own use they are close enough.



Also, that pair of tanks has a float-type quantity gauge with electrical connections to allow reading quantity inside the trailer. These would be expensive tanks to replace.



I have found that the LP dealers I have contacted will not sell me the valves anymore. I assume that this is because of liability issues. I bought the four original ones over a year ago and have been waiting for the tanks to run dry. We don't use too much either.

My TT uses lay down bottles and are 30lb bottles that arnt OPD but no one has hassled me about filling them and I have heard that not all bottles require OPD valves. The propane dealer here doesnt test them, he just looks them over and if they arnt dented and badly rusted re stamps them for a few more years.

We have 40# bottles which are half way or more thru their hydo static test period. When the first bottle was empty, I replaced it with a new bottle with the new OPD. When the next bottle comes up empty I'll replace it.



My problem is what to do with the old bottle. Camping World would not take it, so I now have a unuseable bottle on my hands. Any ideas of what to do?

I would assume that a propane dealer would take it off your hands. They can change out the valve and retest it at their cost and sell it used. Even if they don't do anything with it, they must have a way to recycle them.

Well thanks for all the good info..... I just took them down to the local propane gas company--new valves for about $20 each... not to bad--took them less than 1 hour to change and charge!!! R, J. B.
