Thanks for all the replies looks like I'll be getting a cold front in the near future took a ride down to Girdwood today and truck didnt warm up until we were out of Anchorage coming from Boniface and Debarr. Also will be trying to stay away from the dealers up here I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't need to visit them for anything. Thanks again.

I bought mine here, cheapest place with OEM parts I could find. PM me for how to put it on as like the other guy says, the instructions are poor at best.

Something that I've always thought would be practical would be to fabricate some kind of insulator jacket for the oil pan. That's where I believe there are significat losses of heat.

I had a Mercedes 2. 4 Litre auto with lube temp indicator and if the outdoor temp was-10 F it (the lube oil temp)would not get over 110F after hours of highway driving which probably meant 50% load for the engine. This was verified by seeing moisture in the oil after some time. It would show signs of milkiness.

I would think that you could make something like a "heating element drain plug", like in a gas/electric hot water heater in an RV. Just screw it in, have a wire running to a convenient location and plug it in with the block heater. Does anyone make something like that?

JC whitney has a stick on oil pan heater in their catolauge. I have ran them for the last 12-14 years and swear by them.

Depending on the job and location I can see -50C for start-up temps. [before windchill]

Stupid question... ... ...

I have the battery blankets, so I am pretty sure it has the cold weather block heater on it. I have never used it though.

Soooooo,

Where would the plug be at?

Well if you have the whole kit whihc sound slike you do the one plug powers all at once, but to make sure the block heater is down by the exhaust manifold towards the front of the engine

I've already got the plug and engine block heater apparently those were no longer standard in 2005 as it was listed on the options and they charged about $100 for it unbelievable. I don't know if it was part of some cold weather package or what so will have to go check if it has battery blankets although I have my doubts, otherwise I guess I'll order the one you pointed out as I can tell it sucks the life out of those batteries when its -10 and the intake heater has been on for almost a full minute. I just won't have a need for the wiring harness unless it is somehow specific to the battery blankets. Now I just need to scope out a plug on the outside of my apartment building. .

I checked with Alaska Tent and Tarp today and will be picking up my cold front from them. $45 out the door and $60 installed. From what I could get out of them it installs very similar to the one pictured, but it snaps on so snaps will need to be installed in a couple locations around the radiator. It also zippers open and closed. I'll pick it up next week and let you know what I think. If it is any good, it is less than half the cost of the oem.

I have one from there and it works well, is well made and I got the summer screen version at the same time which uses the same snaps. Last week when it was in the -20s, warm up took about 10 miles. Now that it is only 0 or so, it warms up in under 5 miles.

I have a AK Tent and Tarp winter/summer front and they work great! I had them install it last winter, right after I picked up the truck from the dealer.

Here is the picture of the Cold Front from Alaska Tent and Tarp. It has 6 snaps accross the top and two bungie cords on the bottom. The zipper as you can see is half the hieghts of the piece. Out the door at $54 and some change. I'm sure it will make a difference.

looks nice, did you paint the holes for the snaps so that water does not get in and rust, the snaps that I have used in the past were not solid and could let water and slat etc into the cross member?

? the snaps are attached to sheet metal screws and screwed into the holes. Unless I don't understand the question at all...

got ya, I was just saying when I did snaps on an rv they were rivited on ande so it would aloow some water to get in unless it was sealed but since your were screwed in that elminates that possibility... . Thanks for clarifying.

Ok, I have the cold weather kit on my truck but here in wisconsin we are only seeing lows of 8 and night and 14-24degree highs during the day.

I notice a lot of my temp gauge bouncing around, t-stat doesn't open until 200 then drop to about 185 in town, as soon as I get on the highway and run 73mph or 2k rmps the temp jumps to 190 or 195. IF I pass someone and kick in the turbo the temps go to 200 and then the truck gets a little bogged down. A buddy said I was running too hot with the winter front on. But all the temp threads say 195-200 engine temp is good.

Now when I uncover 1/2 the front the engine temps stay closer to 185 less bouncing of the temp gauge and no bog when I pass someone on the highway. Could my temp sensor be bad or is the winter front causing me to get high EGT's?

Don't have a guage for that yet.

Also will the motor dump more fuel if you are running too warm as I noticed my fuel economy was better with more front open as well.

I put in the front as 80% of my daily commute is not above 35mph so I like some warm in the cab.
