There should be a tag on the rear diff that states the gear ratio. It's also on the window sticker, if you still have it. I've heard it's also on a sticker under the hood or something with a list of a bunch of other option codes.

3 different ways.



#1- check the options sticker on the center underside of the hood.



#2- Check for a metal tag on one of the third member cover bolts.



#3- mark the driveshaft and rear tire with white chalk. Have someone CAREFULLY move the truck until the rear tire makes one full revolution. While they are moving the truck, put yourself in position to watch the mark on the driveshaft. If it turns about 3 1/2 times, you have the 3. 54 (3. 55?) axle. If it turns a little over four full revolutions, you have a 4. 10 axle. HTH.
 
Sixspeed - There should be two tags bolted to the rear differential cover on your truck. On my Y2K truck, one of them is clearly labled "4. 10" and the other is labled with what I remember to be a recommendation to use GL-5 lubricant with MOPAR friction modifier part XXXXX.



Take a look at your rear diff cover tags and see what you really have in that truck. If you're turning 2000 RPM at 70 MPH, I'm guessing you have 3. 54 with the 6 speed. I dunno for sure though, I run about 2000 RPM at 62-63 MPH with my 4. 10 auto in overdrive.

True HOWEVER... ,



this will ONLY work as described by GFoley IF you have an LSD (assuming there is NO clutch slippage).



Bill Lins has the best solution to determine axle ratio (3# on his list).



There should be a metal axle ratio tag attached to one of the rear differential cover bolts (sometimes it's hard to see as it is painted along with the diff. cover at the factory although, it should be there).

BigA, when you say not to tow in overdrive. Do you mean with the auto or the 6spd. Because I tow in 6th gear all the time. At 70 mph I am turning 1900 to 2000 rpm. Which is right in the meat of my power band. If I am hurting somethig let me know.

I will tell you what a transmission mechanic told me. If anyone has better information, please correct me. The manuals,whether the 5 or 6 spd,have an overdrive gear. That gear is not intended for heavy strain. There's less cooling. If you cant maintain speed going up a hill,or even accelerate,you're not only hurting your engine, but you're also hurting your transmission. Yes the higher the RPM, the better cooling effect and efficiency. I have the 3. 55 gears,if I cant maintain at least 1875rpm, I'll go to 4th. If you look at each gear ratio,you will see that 5th on the 5spd and 6th on the 6spd,are of a fairly low ratio(around . 73).

Ratio on Diff cover

If you look at your rear differential cover from the back, you'll see the gear ratio stamped into the houseing. Look in the manual for the location. Mine is on the left.
 
5 or 6 thats the question

Les is right, towing in over drive works BUT DON'T LUG IT. mine is a 5 speed, when pulling the hills and my speed and rrrs start to drop, i go to 4th at 60 to keep the momentum and the rpms in the power band, thats going to get me to the top and keep me happy. but you have to find "the sweet spot" where the engine pulls best for you. heavey loads, E-Brake is a must

HO-5speed 354 ratio!If 5 speed available?Once you go standard rpm's run high because of the lower overdrive-ratio. If you plan on any bomb's stick with 354's!These things are all about grunt 410's are for stockers and v-8's(maxi-pads,powerchokes)and those that drive like little old ladies!You may like 6-speed over 5 if you run lots of 2 lane back-road hills not seen on interstate's!But if you are going to off road at all you will hate the reverse-gear in the 6speed!Too slow -will not give you adequate wheel speed to clean out the mud or snow and you will find that you will be stuck in the middle instead of getting through!If you buy a 6speed buy a shovel and a winch!!!:rolleyes:



PS: does anybody know if there is a double-over 6"TH gear from another source or a taller reverse-gear for the 6speed?

Checking to see what you diff ratio is

To check to see what gears you have in your truck crawl up under it to the rear/front diff convers and look on the axles or covers and you should see some type of tag (usually metal stamped) which will tell you the axle ratio.
 
MPH--RPMS

just wondering, have any of you fellow diesel punchers check your speedo's by stop watch for measured mile @ 60, to see how close you are to acuale 60,? when i done mine after i bought it was "3" mph slow with stock tires (245/75/16s) put goodyears on,265/75/16 same. put firestone 265/75/16on . 4 over 60 mph per my gps. yes it will give your mph on your read out. specs on the firestones 31. 7" tall. i don't even try to figure mileage because one tire travels less rounds per mile than another, every manufacture is different on manf. specs. you see. guess i'll have use the gps for total distance to. but i'm with you, who cares???? my 5 speed @ 2000 is in there @ 70 mph also, 354 gears.
