2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission optima batteries

Objective: Clean up the big cluster of wires on the main battery (+) terminal.



Has anyone replaced the your batteries with optima batteries? I would like to find a heavy duty cable to go from Aux battery using the side terminal to the side terminal of main battery. Then I can use the top post for the cable to starter.

Optima Red Tops in my truck.....

You'll be happy with the Red Tops. No maintainence & no acid splashing on your fenders and under the hood. I like your side cable idea. I would just call NAPA or similar chain auto parts store and give them your request. You can always buy the wire and end hardware and roll your own. I've made up several sets and have never had a problem. Make sure the hardware is tightened properly!

blue tops will be able to recover if you ever drain them. reds arent to good for that.

im happy with my red tops... . about 3 weeks ago i replaced my old junkie advanced auto batteries with them... .

i drained my reds about 3 months ago. ive been told there only gonna last about another year. so far so good but i still wish i went with the blues.

I put the blues in mine and so far there great. The blues also have the threaded studs on top along with the standard battery terminals.

I got a yellow top in my 4x4 toy, and I think I am gonna have to warranty it out, as it doesn't seem to hold a charge more than a week or so.

I've never had problems draining my red tops, even at -40 they recover. I've run reds for years. When they do keel over I'll run yellows or blues.

the yellow top is the only real deep cycle battery. they are worth the money. I use a red top in my race car, and it has been great. I like the fact that they are sealed also. but if your gonna spend the money do it once and buy the yellow tops

NAPA also sells a similar battery with more cranking amps. A few more bucks, but worth it if you have to start it in very cold wx.

Blue tops here. The wing nut marine posts are handy and I use them to isolate the the starter cable from everything else.

The napa batts similar ore the orbitals. I don't know anyone running them or any experience with them. Anyone?

You probably don't want to assume that Optima blue-tops are necessarily more of a deep-cycle battery than red-tops. Blues come in both starting types (34M) and dual-purpose types (D34M and D31M) - see:

Looking at the technical specs, it seems to me that blue-top starting batteries (34M) are pretty much the same as red-tops (34 and 34R) except for their terminal types. I use both kinds, in boat and truck.

I have orbitals. After 3 1/2 yrs of heavy service (about 300k miles) they have performed perfectly. They are rated at 1000 CA and 770CCA. They were more exp than the blue top optimas in my boat (D34) which are rated for 870 MCA (marine crank amps?) and 750 CCA. No one around here sells the 34s (1000/800).

I got 2 of the Oribitals from NAPA and they were cheaper than the Optimas.



They are the same design (look like a 6 pack) as the Optimas. Mine are 750 CCs and I don't think I could get more CCA than that... . not sure about that.



I put them on about 8 months ago and they fire up fast every time. So far I'm satisfied. Cost about $110 each
