So I'm at the pump the other day and the diesel pump has two options. One is described for diesel pickups and cars, 1. 479 per gallon. The optional fuel was Premium Diesel for 1. 539.

Other than the red stuff I thought diesel was diesel... ????

Apparently not. I asked the local Shell station why their diesel was $. 13 per gallon more expensive, and they said it was "premium" diesel. I shook my head, went across the street where they sell more diesel anyway, and filled the truck up.

I've tried that Shell's diesel before, with no benefit whatsoever. I wouldn't waste my money on it again.

It figures. I was just thinking the other day how nice it is not to have that "I'm using inferior fuel" feeling that I get when I fill up my TJ, when I fill up my truck. Another way for the oil companies to charge more money, I suppose:mad:

Premium diesel can mean a number of different things. There was an entire article on it in the TDR several issues back. Usually there is some kind of an additive package, sometimes higher cetane, etc. If I remember right there is no "standard" for premium diesel so it all depends on the station as to what your getting for the extra $.

Use the money you saved not buying premium diesel to add the additive of your choice to your tank and you'll be money ahead and probably have better fuel to boot.

That depends where you live. Some premium diesel is the real deal and offers better performance and running conditions, and some is garbage passed off as 'premium'. In Michigan though, and some midwestern states, true premium diesel fuels are available in some areas. Like BP diesel supreme or Amoco Premier. These two are both 50 cetane minimum, and have an awesome additive package. If you can get your hands on either of these fuels, it's worth whatever it costs.

A bad example of Premium...

Total Petroleum fuel stations sell what they call "Premium Diesel", but it is just what they call it; no merit. We have a local station and I used to run it in my '92 all the time because it was usually slightly cheaper.

One weekend I spent both Saturday and Sunday using my truck to haul round bales. I filled up Friday with their "Premium" and burned the tank Saturday. The truck ran normal for the load it was pulling. I filled up Saturday night at an Exxon station. I burned the Exxon tank Sunday. WOW, what a difference with a load!:--) You could not tell a difference with the empty truck, but loaded, it really made a difference. I don't buy from Total Petroleum any more.
