Who pulls 5ver in mountains w/auto, w/o e-brake

Stronger tires?

Since the last trip w/ 5th and transmission overheating in OD lock up, 2k rpm at less than 40* ambient I ordered a GV OD unit.

Hey J,How much is the GVO/D? Been thinking about it. Would be nice to have a splitter. Get rid of wide splits between 2-3-4.

JNutter,

I had a GV splitter in my 94 auto. One thing to keep in mind, you cant use the engine / transmission as a break with the Gear Vender splitter engaged when going down hill. One good thing about the GV and an auto, is that you can shift at WOT!!!. It's actually pretty smooth. You might reconsider and take a look at the US Gear. Just my . 02

Love the smell of diesel in the morning. Hope your watchen DC cuz every thing you see here is a big lie, Hehe.

I looked at the US Gear unit but they can self destruct the auto drivetrain if not shifted just right. The GV hooks into the chassis computer and will auto shift to direct and lock out od when ex. brake and/ or 4 wheel drive is/ are engauged. There were a couple of used US G unit for sale last month, less than 5k mi off of autos for $800 - 900. They did not like the shift qualities with the auto. With an auto the gear split in 4x4 is unnecessary so the US G in 4x is a non issue. If a US G self destructs the truck is dead in the water as it is installed between the transmission and xfer case, the GV is mounted on the output of the xfercase to the rear axle so if it self destructs you can still use the front axle to limp in some where.
Just a note: $2495, includes auto shift electronics and harnesses - GV is increasing prices the 1st of March.

Jack,

I think you made a good choice. I think you'll like it a lot.

Congrat's on stepping in the world of being able to split'em. I am sure reguardless of the unit you choose each has its own advantages/disadvantages over the other. The unit I have came with the truck when I got it. Yes, it is a pain of not using the exhaust brake with the unit engaged. But will just have to live with that. Key advantages of using a splitter is putting the right gear ratio to the power or visa versa. I normally pull the 5'er in 4th over. If I need the exhaust brake then shiftup to straight 5th and hit the switch for the brake. Sorry for the long post. You will also like the increase in MPG when running empter... Ordered me a Gearvendors O/U too. I communicated with JSchooley first. It's nice to have experience to help make those high $$ decisions.

I have a 5 speed with 4. 10 gears and was looking for a taller gear when empty, and something to fill the gap between 3rd & 4th.

I'm going to keep the original drive shaft and have a new one built for the GV.

Wife told me to go ahead and buy a Duramax after she rode in one. I'd rather run the Cummins.

It is a pretty expensive add on, but you will wonder how you ever drove your truck without it.

JNUTTER---Please post your GearVendors installation and user comments when you do it. I have also been thinking of this unit. My father in law had one in a gas pick up with an automatic ten years ago and it worked slick.

GOOD IDEA think I will too.

BAD IDEA!!!

It's here . Arrived yesterday. Since I have to work in the BIG shop, It will pobably be next month when it get's installed.
Well packaged, UPS boogered the box real good but couln't damage the goods, well engineered packaging. Exellent instuction/ installation book and schematics.
I figure 1/2 day for the gear box install and one full day for the wiring and electonic systems interface ( I'm anal about wiring ).
A few hours for drive shaft install and testing.
We will see how long it really takes.

Mine arrived Friday 2/23.

Have you picked up your two quarts of GM Part # 12346190 or Mopar #04874459 synthetic gear oil?

If it warms up, I might do mine this weekend and have the drive shaft built on Monday.

Looks like fun. It's a good thing my Dad bought me an Erector set when I was 8 years old - back in 1957.
