After reading many posts on exhaust, it was about time for me to get a new exhaust system. Mainly due to the cat, I have over 110,000 miles and the cat is definately getting cloged up and robbing me of power. I feel that I should keep the cat on the system but I would need to clean it out before reattaching it. Any advice/tricks to installing this system and reinstalling the cat ... or should I bother? I live in NH where 10 bucks get you a sticker no questions asked for the most part, but, I am still leary of somehow getting a $2,500+ fine for not having the cat in the exhaust. Also I have no welding skills/equipment, but since the Jardine is a "bolt on" system, I should not have any problems ... right????
Thanks in advance.

The Jardine is a nice easy system to install. You will like it!
H. O. Ram... email sixshift@aol.com... he is looking for a resonator, I believe your rig has a resonator, not a cat!

Hi Rob,

Yes, you are correct. I do have a resonator on my '01. I have a cat off my '95 CTD. I will e-mail. Thanks, Sam.

Thanks for the offer H. O. Ram, but I'm trying to find ways NOT to reinstall my old cat. When I spoke with the person at Jardine's about the cat, he said to get rid of it. He said that people in places like NY and Conn. are removing them and they have a lot stricter inspection rules then here in NH. He said that there is no regulations for having a cat on a diesel ... anyone else heard of that? I think I may just clean out my old cat and save it just in case. What do you folks think?

Fatcat, knock the guts out. Then it will still be visible for inspection. JMO

H. O. Ram,
Cleaning the guts out would be the best idea and then reinstalling the cat, but, since I have no welding skills/equipment, how would one reattach the cat to the new exhaust systems. I have heard of people cutting the front of the cat to where the diameter of the opening is 4" or a little bigger and running the pipe through it. Would this be best? Wouldn't it look like it had been severly tampered with? I still am leaning on removing the cat and storing it for a later date, and if necessary, have a machanic install it if it the laws are changed.

FATCAT,

I can't tell you what to do with your cat other than I would maybe set it aside for later if your worried. I bought my 97' used with no cat. As for the rest of the project, at 110k use a sawzall to remove the old system. Heat up the bolts/flanges for the downpipe to break them loose. I put my BD brake on at the same time. That strap clamp can really get stuck but the torch will save it. Even MAPP gas will do the trick if you don't have a big torch. Lay the exhaust system out on the floor and visualize how all the brackets will be lined up etc. Might want to do this first and look at the stock hangers prior to removal. I have the Jardine too by the way. Check out Geno's monster tip. Really finishes off the system.

If you do add a tip, take a hint from other members. I wish I had thought of this, clean up the pipe and use antisieze so you can remove the tip during the winter. Otherwise it will get pitted.
