Is part # 3990105 the latest number? Going to get a spare fuel filter lid also, along with some banjo washers. Anything else

to have on hand, foe either at home or in the truck?

changed the fuel filter for first time and can see that if you got a bad load of fuel and had to change the filter at night, you could easily strip the threads on the top. an ounce of prevention-----!

You can also use the carter P4601HP (18psi 100gph) from Napa. Napa stores are easy to come by. it runs about $120 and has a warranty.

It mounts the same as ours but has larger i/o ports.

Yes, 3990105 is the latest revision. Yesterday, I picked up one at Cummins Atlantic in Wilson, NC. The price was $171 before the 10% Cummins Power Booster discount. Make sure you ask for the sealing washers that are needed for a change - they don't come with the pump. I personally gave up with fighting to get my original pump changed by DC with 4 PSI at WOT. My greatest fear was that they would re-program the ECU if I said there was a low power problem.

When I changed my lift pump last month I used the one that I had in the truck, just in case. I bought another pump for the spares box I also picked up the wiring harness adapter neeeded by the 98 trucks. I figured that I could use it to adapt another style pump without cutting into the original harness. It cost 7. 46 at the Cummins Dealer. It has male and female connectors same as the harness and pump.

The cummins part is a Carter Pump with metric ports. You could use some 5/16 fuel hose some 3/8 npt elbows and 2 barbs to rid yourself of the banjo's and spend only $120 on the pump.

If you want to get high tech go with #6AN fittings. you will gain 2-4 psi of FP.

Cummins is great but their parts prices stink.

There are a lot of things you can do rather cheaply to improve the fuel system if get out of the mindset that factory parts are better.

Not flaming. I just hate to see good folks waste money on inferior equipment.

On another note I have spoken to several people that believe the reason for the failure rate is electrical. I think it is a lack of sufficient current under load. While you are at it. . replacing the pump... . put a relay on the power supply wire. It is sourced from the ECM and is limited to 1A of output.

The carter makes this really easy because the power input is 2 terminal posts.

Mark, I too went with the P4601HP it is louder than the cummins version but at $81. 95 via Summit Catalog I couldn't go wrong and that was 18K ago. (Remote mounted of course. )

Also I am using the orginal pumps power with no relay and all is still well. :)

As for the AN6 fittings that is a bit spendier than the Geno's Garage banjo fittings. Which I didn't go with but have installed and am impressed with none the less. They claim that they open the holes upto . 188 and the stock size is . 150, they sure looked like a elongated . 188! (The holes looked bigger than . 188)They are the way I would recommend just cause of the money issue. Budget performance is where its at... Just my two cents worth.

But all that Anodized Aluminum has got to be worth at least 10hp;);):D

A fellow who is ad venturous and had a drill press could hog them out for free. I have a stock pump and wiring but have eliminated the banjo's w/ Weber fittings(12mmx1. 5mm pitch to #6AN), #6AN and 5/16 fuel hose. I never see below 12psi of FP and cruise at 14-15 most of the time. I have some of the biggest injectors that you can run in a 24v and have no fuel supply problems.

I will be adding a relay soon. This lift pump was replaced under warranty at 36,500(2-3k ago) so I had no need to mess with it at the time.

Thanks,

Mark

picked up the spare today for $130, I have the free 100k warrenty so i don't mind spending a little more to keep the warrenty. ED

Other parts for the trip

Fuel filter, belt, shop manual, make sure you check the spare to ensure it has plenty of air and of course an array of tools. I've found the more you take the less you need. Last year we tripped to Yellowstone, I brought sooooooo much stuff the wife thought I was nuts. But it payed off when the belt got frayed as it started to crawl into the A/C compressor. 10 minute change. Enjoy the trip.
