Why Order?

Why do so many folks "order" a new truck? I've always just visited a few lots or called around untill I found a truck with the equipment I want.

Not knocking anyone here - just curious.

I ordered because I wanted a very specific set of options and body style. I live in the DC suburbs, not a real haven for truck dealerships. There were perhaps 30 on all the Dodge lots combined. None were being shipped with the set up I wanted.

I'm not willing to suffer for the next fifteen years with a truck that's not the way I wanted from the start. If I got it wrong, that's one thing, If I compromised, that's something else. So I put in an order. It's not a critical 'got to have it now' vehicle and I'm having a blast tracking the build process and calling the dealer for information.

My dealer intentionally does not stock 3500s. If there's one the on the lot, it's a cancelled purchase. They feel it's easier/better to order what you want when you get to that level - shouldn't compromise on a one-ton.

Yep, I agree. I wouldnt spend 37k without getting exactly what I wanted, not close, exactly. I called before to make sure they had a truck with what i wanted, no more, no less. Off hand I would say there were 20 odd 3500's when I got there. I counted 7 in graphite the color I wanted. Those guys move a little better than 20 a day. Chances are they have exactly, and I mean exactly, not close, the truck you want. Or will in a matter of days. I have ordered a few times myself. Nothing wrong with that. If I had not been able to get the truck I wanted I would have ordered rather than get something close but not quite there. Knowing what i do now though i would not. I would bet good money that I would have the truck weeks earlier by just telling em what I wanted in kellog and waiting for it to show up.

I fell in love with my 94 on the lot and I'd like to have a dime for every time I said "I wish", "shoudda" or "next time". It's worth the (6-8 week) wait to get exactly what you want. The options are much more expensive if you put them on later and sometimes you can't. It is pretty costly to change gear ratios and trannys, etc. I doubt that I would ever see the truck I just took delivery on yesterday on a lot anywhere and I kind of like it that way. My truck is pretty much unique to me when I get all done with it.
