I use a program called setnametotime, $15 shareware, google search will find it. You just right click the old file names panel and select individual photo or folder of pictures. You can adjust how you want the date to appear. 200912254503 takes it down to the second. This program only works with pics taken with a digital camera, not cell phone pics or scans. They have to have exif data. I used to loose pics occasionally because of them having same file names and getting overwritten, I have over 10,000 pics and many folders in a family tree arrangement. By using date-time, every pic has a unique file name. It makes it easy to file pics with three people in it to three differently named folders.

Kenny - you are right......

I'm not sure if it does date or not but google picasa has a really nice feature of organizing pictures with face recognition. It works pretty good and its free

Picasa Web Albums Features

I downloaded the New Google Earth and it had Picasa ... . it is fantastic and it scanned my 100,000+ photos, and allowed me to see exactly which ones were duplicates... ... and there were many. Being able to have the Photos organized by Date and Time taken is huge... . no way from your own camera can you have duplicates :)

And here is the FREE site forthose who have not tried it yet... .

Well I sure as heck ain't left

Did it do the organize by date? I haven't had that much time to play with it.

Yes it did ......

and by time as well... for example I often have photos that were taken over at least 1-2 days..... it organizes them such that if I take some out of a folder, and make a new one, it will place it where it should be with regards to the remaining photos. Now I have only done this with photos in a group... . but it works slick... .

Cool, Glad I could help and it worked for you I only had a chance to do the facial recognition I was amazed by how good that worked I will now try to break it down to age order (date taken)
