origin of rights

I got asked about this a while back and was not able to give an answer that satisfied me. I was hoping that someone here could help.

Rights do not originate with the government. What the government gives they can take away. This is recoginized in our Bill of Rights. The BoR is a list of things the government is prohibited from doing. So what is the origin of our inalianable rights?

They would be correct.

Yes. . God gave us the right to do right or do wrong, it's our choice. Government imposes upon us what it deems as wrong. Does this make it less confusing?

It would seem that God gave us our rights. The gov't can only take them away. The Bill of Rights is a list of rights that they have chosen not to take away.



God also gave us brains so that we can exercize our rights without infringing on others' rights.
