Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Original vp44

I have a 2001 Dodge with original injector pump and 348k miles. I need to replace due to hard warm starts confirmed with garden hose. I have been reading numerous post about vp44 replacement and still can't determine which company togo with and if spending more money would get me the longevity I am use too. I wish I could have mine rebuilt. I wonder how many times reman one are rebuilt.



To date.

two lift pumps(200k and 290k)

two power steering pumps(250k and 290k)

one starter(280k)

two water pumps and belts and hoses(200k and 300k)

one cam shaft sensor(275k)

one apps(260k)

vacuum pump rebuild(290k)

Steering gear box(290k) wasnt necessary

1 tie rod long time ago

clutch (300k)

replaced nv4500 when clutch was getting replace(because was told 5 gear would be wearing out.

two sets of batteries( who nows when)

brake pads twice

1 heater(250kish)

lots of headlights. less once fixed condensation.



Ac stop cooling last summer> dad said its form lack of oil in compressor

drive window will go do once but not twice in a row.



Oil change every 7k and maybe 10 fuel filters

Up here the only choice is a Bosch reman pump regardless of who sells it. Bosch offers a 1 year warranty as long as the pump isn't tapped or otherwise modified.

Just make absolutely sure you ask the manufacture if they put new computers on the pumps. some builders do and some don't. Very important you get a NEW computer. That's what appears to be wrong with yours at this point judging by the hard starts when hot. The link above for Blue Chip is an excellent source of info.
Which lift pump have you been running? FyI recomended fuel filter changes are around 15k miles, but it looks like what youve been doing has worked for you so far.

I used Chip's pump. In a bind I had the dealer do the installation (after I had bought the pump myself). They charged me $125. Total costs including the pump was about $1900. Mine died at about 220,000 miles.

I have used a airtex, but if I was hauling more I would upgrade to more flow. I changed fuel filter irregularly til I learned more about vp44 about two years ago staring changing every other oil change.

I would not pour cold water on a hot injection pump. The clearances are critical. You will shrink the aluminum case but not the internals. When you start it you can score pieces and parts.



If down time is not a factor, you can have your pump rebuilt.

You basically have two choices, get a reman from Blue Chip or someplace similar, or, get a Bosch reman from any Bosch certified shop. Rebuilding these pumps is not that easy and there are not that many places than can do it correctly.

I don't know where you live so this might not help you, but Southwest Diesel & Electrical Corp. in Phoenix, AZ. looks to be the real deal, check out their web site. I have not used them so I have no first hand knowledge.



If you just dribble a small amount of water on the Pump Computer it might be okay. However, I don't even recommend washing your engine at a car wash. If the pump is hot, it is vulnerble to cold or even warm water. Wash them at home before start up or just a short run period.
