Any chance litigation could kill internet forums?

TDR MEMBER
Are there other forums of which you are a member that require an annual subscription like the TDR?

I ask because I believe the annual subscription is a big reason this site is such unbelievably high quality, and the quality of the people in it and running it is beyond reproach.

I've recently become a member of a few other forums, all of which are free. Although they have many great members, they also seem to have an incredible amount of infighting, arguing, and general :-{} . With no fees, the "riff-raff" are free to run amok. And their forum software and administration is, at least compared to TDR, poor.

So if you're aware of other fee-based forums, what are they?

Can't think of any other "fee" boards. But, the fee doesn't deter all of the riff-raff. Although, the trouble makers are usually aren't here too long. At least on the truck side of things. The political forum, that is a different story. Gets pretty hot in there sometimes. :-laf

I'm on www.thedieselgarage.com as well, which covers the the big three, and it stays pretty civil, like here. Also has forums specifically for big trucks, ag, and heavy equipment as well. Pretty nice site. They are needing to upgrade servers, or add more. Can get pretty slow sometimes.

No, but it sure does cut back on it! And I feel like psychologically people think that if they're paying to be a member they have a vested interest in seeing the site succeed and prosper, and are therefore far less likely to just "stir the pot" to satisfy some internal desire to mess with people.

I belong to quite a few other forums, mostly performance cars and boats, for the most part there is little problem with trolls. TDR is pretty good, not sure I would pay though if you did not get the magazine as well for the $35 a year.

I guess it must depend on the forum. I'm a member of a couple forums that are on exactly the same subject material but the environments are almost diametrically opposed.

Weird.

I agree. I am a member on another forum that is free and because of this there is very heavy traffic and postings, much of which is not worth reading. I feel our membership dues are a bargain.

Ditto on the fee, is was awesome around here with just 3000 members, back in the day. The other brand site, had about 7xs more than us, but the quality of the technical information was no comparison.

I hope I never see TDR go free.

I agree. Check out the tow vehicle forum on rv.net to see forums at their best, or at least entertaining. :-{}

Yep, I don't waste my time on the rv.net forum.

I am one of the original members of the Lance (slide-in truck camper) Owners of America forum which also charges an annual fee. Like this forum, there is a lot of helpful information on it and don't get the junk that is on the rv.net.
