There I was, just started up and moving down the road when I looked at the gauges just in time to see the oil pressure guage drop to ZERO... . The chime went off and I turned the engine off and coasted into a parking lot. Checked the wires to the oil pressure sensor and they were ok. Started up and no oil pressure. Shut it down quick and called the wife. Went home and got some tools and a mechanical guage and installed it in the top of the oil filter boss. Started up and 65 psi, WHEW, relief. So I go to the dealer and tell the parts man I need an oil pressure sensor. He says "I got one, but you better sit down, because it costs $195. 95". :--) Whoa, it's only an oil pressure sensor, not the golden lamb. I don't trust anyone working on my truck, that's why I went to get the part, so, shocked at the cost, I went to the service guys and asked if it was covered under warranty. The service writer looked up the VIN in the computer, and the truck has 49025 miles on it and says, "Sorry, it's not covered". Man, I was hot. Anyway, I go to NAPA, and they don't even show the sensor in their books. So, I drive across town to the other Dodge dealer and ask their parts guy and he says it costs $195. 95. I ask if he can give me a break on it and he says, "You look like a guy that works on trucks, I'll give you the jobber price and let you have it for $120. 00. Just then, a guy who was listening asks what happened and I tell him, (he's a service writer), and he says it is covered under warranty and when he checks the VIN and the milage, he says to bring it around and they will fix it under warranty. To top this off, he saw my TDR grill badge and says "So, you're one of those TDR fanatics, huh, we'll take good care of you and your truck, I know that you TDR folks are real fussy about your trucks". I said "fanatics??" And he laughed saying he meant it as a compliment and he would fix me up. Anyway, the writer put lots of plastic and paper in the cab, and drove it back there himself and the diesel guy worked on it, not the shop monkey. They fixed the truck in an hour and I was back on the road, and fanatically happy, it didn't cost a cent. This dealer is OK in my book, the other @*^hole won't see me within a missile shot of his place. There must be some markup on those parts if they were going to give it to me for $120. , down from $195. 95. Be aware guys, that sensor costs some large American dollars. Sorry for the long post, but that's the story... .

Larry, how did they fix it, Reflash the computer, replace the sensor or both?

I have heard stories about this reflash, something about the oil pressure gauge never drops below 35psi or something to stop it from going to 0. Everybody that has had it done says "don't do it"

i had the reflash done before i joined tdr. i had 45 psi of pressure with the key on engine off. i told them this wasn't right. they replaced the oil pressure sender and it fixed that problem, i still don't know if the idiot lights will come on if i loose pressure. ken

I believe it does have gold covered contacts in it. I'm not positive, but I know when Cummins first started with the Electronics, (Anyone remember PACE?) There was some comments of gold plated switches and sensors due to the relativley low +5VDC that the electronics use. I know Jake dash switches jumped from 7 to 35 dollars overnight.

As far as markup, if we all knew what the markup was from manufacturer to us we would:--) :--) . It's bad enough as it is and 100% isn't uncommon. Good old supply and demand.

I didn't even think of trying Cummins for the sensor. I'm still stunned over the markup cost, even between dealers. Anyway, they just replaced the sensor, but they did check the computer for codes/faults, etc. but did not reflash. I was surprised to see how much and what data that thing records. Max rpm, temp, max speed etc. all kinds of things are recorded, my computer was ok and showed that I treated her right and didn't abuse her. You guys are right, it hits hard knowing the markup from manufacture to the end user, talk about legalized robbery.

Don't ever bother asking the dodge dealer about a Cummins part!

For some reason dodge marks up Cummins parts outrageously. The best and cheapest place to get Cummins parts is obviously from Cummins or a big-rig/Cummins dealer.

I glad you found a EXPERIENCED service adviser. It can get confusing on whats covered under the engine warranty and whats not. But i'm amazed that everybody gets upset over markup. (i do too)but thats how business is done everywhere. Next time if it happens you need surgery etc. ask surgeon what he charges retail and then see what insurance pays etc. My back surgery i was told retail was about $4400. Insurance paid $880. 00. This is for surgeon only. Wife clocked him. He was with me 45 minutes!
