how do i test my ecm? my truck will start some times and other times it wont. when it does run it runs good so i cant see y the mechanic says its the vp thats bad (the vp is his best GUESS at y the truck runs intermittant) when i had it diag. the obdII kept losing communication with the truck. the batteries were fully charged and good connections. if you drive the truck (that is if u get it started) for a while and shut it off it wont restart but if u left it cool off for about 2 hours it will start. although i havent been able to get it started for a while now. my FASS cycles like its supposed to but there were a couple times it didnt cycle until i bumped it again. any ideas about whats goin on? any help is much appreciated

Error codes? Cycle the key on and off three times, leaving it on the third time. Write down the codes. P0216 means VP44 is gone! SNOKING

Not to be a smart a** here but are you sure you don't have an air leak somewhere in the system? If heating and cooling (expansion and contraction) make a difference I would start there.

i got the truck started today and drove it around but when i shut it off no restart. went out 3 hours later no restart. when i went out the first time it wouldnt start it would just crank. i check the connections they were all good. i tried to start it again and it just cranked. so then i bumped it a couple times i let the FASS cycle three times bout 25 seconds each time and then tried to start it and it fired right up. so ??? im stumped. i have fuel to the vp checked that numerous times, no codes, good connections, fuel coming out of the injecters. i want to narrow it down as much as possible because i dont want to buy a new vp and have it be the ecm and vice versa. thanks for ur replies any thing helps

Just for kicks, put a hose on your fuel filter drain, open it and cycle the key, acc. no start. The lp should cycle for about 20-30 seconds. Catch the fuel in a bucket, you should get at least a quart, my raptor will shoot out about 1/2 gallon. That will at least eliminate the lp and that section of the ecm... ... .

I guess the next thing I would do, is pull the plug on the ecm and check for corrosion, and broken pins, use electrical grease and put it back on if in good shape. Then i would use the same grease and start using it on all the connections i could find, pcm, lift pump, map, iat, apps,vp44, exc.
If you lost communication with the obd11, you have something loose or not making good connection, or temp going open. I would also grind/sand all the grounds and grease them also... ... ... ... ... .

From my short experience with the Dodge/Cummins, I have had several issues with my truck and the fueling system. I have replaced ECM, APPS, but it always ends up being the faulty VP-44. I have replaced it 5 times in 2 years... the symtons have always been different. I have gotten numerous codes at one juncture and on one pump I did not get any codes... .

My money is on the VP-44. .

My truck usually doesn't like to restart when warm either. It needs a VP44 but what I do when it won't start is unplug the coolant temperature sensor by the upper rad hose start the truck and plug the sensor back in. It sets the check engine light but the truck starts up instantly. When I save some money I'll replace the VP44.

Two things more to check ,Starter ground , AIT , air intake sensor . Ron Awating two hours then it will start sounds like the starter windings get hot causing the resistence to the point of no start ,two hours and a start make me think starter ground or starter going out . Ron

check engine light came on following codes came up

1693,1694, 1698, 0232, 0234 (which is boost to high)

P1694- (M) No CCD Messages received from

ECM

Bus communication failure to PCM.

P1698- No CCD Messages received from

PCM

Bus communication failure to PCM. A 9Companion DTC9

was set in both the ECM and PCM.

P0232-Fuel Shutoff Signal Voltage Too High Fuel shut-off signal voltage too high from ECM to fuel

injection pump.

I'm gonna ask a real stupid question, but I gotta ask so humor me... ...

..... are you waiting for the 'Wait to Start' lamp to illuminate, cycle and go out before you turn the key?

Diesels are funny that way.

I had that happen when the ground going to the ECM from the left battery came loose and was corroded. On the left battery ground is a 8 gauge wire that if loose will cause the truck to go crasy and it will trash the VP-44 in a heartbeat. Has the truck backfired and ran really rough, check the electrical. If not it's the VP-44. Good Luck
